Cardigans and dresses

Anonymous
I feel like secretaries wear cardigans, execs wear blazers. Which one are you? Which one do you want to be?
Anonymous
Wow, who would have thought a cardigan would cause so much debate! Not everyone is aspiring to be super fashionable. I am a youngish exec and I hate blazers so usually have one hanging in my office but keep the cardigan on 90% of the time. Am I the most stylish person in the office? Nope. But I look respectable and am taken seriously my team and executive peers which is all the matters. Even a blazer can look frumpy. The key is a nice fit and good quality fabric (no pilling, loose threads, etc).

Wut?

At work?

Yup. Women have quite a bit a leeway in office comfort because of how cold the thermostat is usually set. I have zero interest in sitting at my desk in a dry-clean only suit jacket. Cardigans look dumb on me (I'm short and round). People use shawls, pullovers, and literal blankets wrapped around them. I like my zip-up hoodie. It's cozy.

These look nice. Google a waterfall cardigan and cocoon cardigan, OP.

Yes, my office is this way too. I have a blanket, others have hoodies. Our boss doesn’t care what we wear at our desks and it doesn’t influence her opinion of us. She could care less if we are wearing pajamas at our desks as long as we look professional in court and meeting with witnesses or making other public appearances. I commute in flip flops in the summer and clogs in the winter as well, and it’s nice to sometimes just leave them on and have pain-free feet all day.

I disagree. Cardigans tend to be frumpy. You have to try very hard for them not to be. It’s the kind of style (sleeveless dresss and cardigan) that’s very popular for 20 somethings. As you get older it simply isn’t a good luck.

OP look for dressss with sleeves. Cheaper retailers like jcrew make so many sleeveless dresses because it’s cheaper. Look for dresses at ReiSs, Theiry, Karen Miller, etc.

Ok, fashion diva. Show me the dresses you think I should be wearing as partner in a law firm. I wear Theory and Karen Millen, but the vast majority of them are sleeveless or shortsleeve, including their fall/winter lines. I personally think long-sleeved dresses are not very professional looking, particularly the ones they are showing now with the fuller and flared sleeves.

OP, Nic & Zoe has some cute more structured cardigans and sweater material blazers that work well. Would welcome other suggestions from PP who clearly does not work in a professional office.

Pp here. I admit it’s hard to find dresses with sleeves. Here are a few

Here are some structured blazers that would look better than cardigans

I would buy 1-2 blazers and mix and match with a few nice silk tops and skirts/pants

The woman asked you for dresses good enough for a law firm partner and you sent her links to schoolgirl outfits.

What are you smoking? I am a partner. These blazers are fine.

Sleeveless -- can wear it all year round, including in DC summers.

I wear dresses with blazers when I have formal events or am meeting with clients, and dresses with cardigans when I am spending my day at my desk and not meeting so much with others.

OP, where do you normally shop for cardigans? Because I see them literally everywhere. All the stores.

+10000

-10000. Do you really want to look like most women in dc with professional jobs? Frump city. They don’t even wear nice shoes.

Yes, I do. Because a majority of professional jobs for women in DC are in conservative dress environments. That's just the way it is...

In the winter, women want their entire arm covered. Short sleeves still require a layer over top.

And damn if I could afford a $500 jacket I'd have stylist helping me. (I'm not OP, but a NP)

Huh? A Hugo boss suit dress is NOT a school girl outfit. Nor is a tweed suit jacket.

The Jcrew shorter cardigan is out of style. Longer cardigans are what's popular now.

Both those dresses are way too short. Also that model looks to be about 21. Not exactly the professional 30/40 something look most of us are going for.

All of the posted dresses have short sleeves! I'm not wearing a cadigan or blazer because I lack 3 inches of sleeve, I'm wearing another layer because my office is cold!
