Cardigans and dresses

Anonymous
For years, I have worn work dresses with cardigans. I need to replace a couple and I'm having a hard time finding nice ones. Are these out of style now? Am I dating myself by wearing this most days? If so, what are people wearing over dresses? I don't really need a blazer all the time, but some dresses are short sleeve and I do need something in the fall and winter. Any thoughts?

It is not a good look, OP. Replace the dresses, not cardigans.

Are you saying don’t wear short sleeve dresses?

Don’t wear dresses that require a cardigan.

I disagree. Cardigans tend to be frumpy. You have to try very hard for them not to be. It’s the kind of style (sleeveless dresss and cardigan) that’s very popular for 20 somethings. As you get older it simply isn’t a good luck.

OP look for dressss with sleeves. Cheaper retailers like jcrew make so many sleeveless dresses because it’s cheaper. Look for dresses at ReiSs, Theiry, Karen Miller, etc.

Anything short sleeves don’t look good on women unless you have toned skinny arms. Cardigans are super frumpy and boxy and the fit depends on the fabric blend.

I wear a slightly cropped open cardigan with dresses, waist of dress matches or is close to hem of cardigan. Or a longer open cardigan works, depending on length. Sometimes I belt a more traditional cardigan over a dress.

I got a Kate spade cardigan that looks super cute with dresses - 3/4 length sleeves that have a bow detail on the cuff... not frumpy at all.

That’s pretty much the definition of frumpy. You think a grown woman should be wearing bows?! Kate Spade looks cute on 20 somethings.

OP the dress and blazer/cardigan combo can be tough.

I’d look into a stylist or something like trunk club for a reboot of your clothing. You must realize your current style isn’t working and you’re right it is dated and also probably not that flattering. Have a stylist help you with a work wardrobe including skirts, pants, and blazers. Good luck.

As a cheaper alternative to the cardigan, you might try the Express cutaway blazer: https://www.express.com/clothing/women/black-cutaway-blazer/pro/6744702/color/PITCH%20BLACK/

Not as formal as a traditional blazer, but adds some warmth over a dress. I don't like the look of cardigans any more, either, at least not over dresses.

DP here and I am In my 40s and I can not pull off a blazer and stick to cardigans. Tried the blazer and I am short and about 30 lbs overweight and just look bad and always have. Can’t afford a personal shopper option or having something tailored
