Let me ask one question to people who are in so-called better schools and have escaped the terrible curse of dealing with the "diversity" of Germantown schools - are the education needs of your children being FULLY met in the better MCPS school? Are you not paying for enrichment and acceleration outside the school day in money, time or effort ? Are you completely happy with the teachers, the administrators. the rigor of the curriculum. the grading, the textbooks and assignments or the opportunities? No? Well, then you are in the same boat as MCPS students and parents in Germantown.

MCPS education is uniformly disappointing in all its schools. Yes, the White and Asian population that is predominant in W schools get a lot of enrichment and acceleration outside of the school. Guess what? Asians and Whites in Germantown do the same for their kids. It is a pretty much an even playing field. As for the AA and HI students? Those with rich and educated parents are doing well regardless of if they are in Bethesda, Germantown or Silver Spring.

Unless your kid is going to a test in rigorous magnet program -
- they are not getting a more rigorous and accelerated curriculum from MCPS,
- their peer group in the classroom is not uniform in capabilities and intellect, and
- the parents of most of their peers are not all equally engaged, aware and prioritize education.

And if your kids are going to magnet programs (well except TPMS and Eastern f**ked some of your better neighborhoods last year)...then Germantown is a much better bang for your housing buck.

I'm not a PP but I used to lived in a townhouse across the street from Northwest behind the Clopper Mill Village Shopping Center when my oldest was a toddler. We made sure to get out before he entered school. We live in Rockville now so we aren't super rich like Bethesda or Potomac families. We are very happy with our elementary that feeds into RM and the tons of amenities we have here. You must live up in Boyds because where we lived was pretty bad. The parks were nice and our townhouse was very pretty and it was an extremely diverse area but there was definitely a higher than average amount of crime. We had to call the police multiple times after we heard yelling and teenagers sneaking around in the alley behind our house. Houses on OUR block had been broken into during our time there as well. Maybe near Woodcliffe area it isn't as bad but that isn't a huge area itself. We moved after we heard GUNFIRE for the second time... yes it was really a shooting. I'm still shocked some people still think Germantown is a great area. We even lived on the nice side! Our previous experiences there continue to make DH and I stay way clear of Germantown. The shopping center always had empty storefronts and the Shoppers is not very nice.

Sorry, the area by the Shoppers shopping center isn't the nice side. --used to live in Germantown, now live in Clarksburg

So then what is? Waters Landing? Cinnamon Woods? Gunners Lake? Fox Chapel Area? Milestone? Town Center? Pretty sure it is this area since it has the two best elementaries(Matsunaga and Great Seneca Creek which are both still pretty average).

The townhouses behind Shoppers is way too close to Cinnamon Woods to be on the nice side. The area right around Matsunaga ES is nice, there are pockets in Waters Landing. The neighborhood around Gibbs is nice. Around McNair is nice. The area by the SoccerPlex is nice.

We lived in Germantown. When we moved back to the DC area, we thought we wanted to live somewhere in MOCO, so we rented a nice townhouse while we looked for a home to buy. We ended up breaking our lease and getting the hell out after six months. I still feel sick to my stomach just driving into Montgomery County. You couldn't pay me to live in Germantown again. We ended up buying in Fairfax County again.

Honestly Germantown is not a nice place to live. You cannot disagree with this statement.

When you Google news articles to support your point, at least check the date. This happened in 2009 for crying out loud.

This is the best comment on this thread. I cannot stop laughing.

They get robbed in Richard Montgomery too...and this happened this year unlike your weak-ass story from 2009. http://www.bethesdamagazine.com/Bethesda-Beat/2018/Report-Richard-Montgomery-High-Student-Charged-with-Armed-Robbery-of-Classmate-Near-Campus/

You don’t need to quote articles..

I live here. I haven’t ever heard gunshots, regardless of any shootings or robberies in the news.

My children play outside with other neighborhood children outside, sometimes until 9pm in the summer bc it’s still light out . But you wouldnt know by reading articles. You’d know by living here.

And can someone explain all the crime in Bethesda? Yet it’s ok to live there bc W schools. ::eye roll:;

Sigh...

Worked at Richard Montgomery when a student brought a weapon into the school, when a security guard had a relationship with a student, when a student tried to OD in the restroom from pills another student gave them, when a baskball coach had a relationship with a student, witnessed several fights.

So many ppl seem to forget the shooting and murder at Rockville Station.

Just last year there was a rape at Rockville HS.

Whitman has had several suicides and deaths (just last year an under age student died after drinking alcohol and wandering outside alone).

Damascus had a heroin problem.

Sherwood has a racism problem (there was an article about it).

These are just a few that come to mind. And if you actually work in the county you hear about more issues. No area is perfect and crime is everywhere. You are delusional if you think your school is perfect and that much better than others.

The bottom line is people think that more brown people in the neighborhood means more crime. They think the same way about schools. Take Northwest High School and leave everything the same except change the demographics so that it's 40% white, and I guarantee that people will be raving about that school.

Sure I can. And I do.

But I guess it's an honor that Germantown, like Blair HS, has its haters on DCUM.
