| I just looked at Grand Oasis on yelp and it has terrible reviews! OP don’t you check reviews before booking? |
Doesn't sound like you're visiting Mexico on a budget. That's a major difference from OP's resort selection. |
This was YEARS ago. And I'm one of those bad reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor. |
Nice places run at least $500 a night. I can't even get a nice, place in Bethany for less than $750 a night. |
|
The gunmen on jet skis shooting at the vendor in front of a resort, the three people shot in front of a bar, and 57 people killed in a month are troubling enough, but the three police officers arrested for kidnapping really gives one pause. Why would anyone pay to vacation there? Cue the "bad stuff can happen anywhere, you're completely overreacting" posters. |
So Mexico is either a beautiful, safe country full of warm lovely people, or its a dangerous, filled with murderous gangs, and every Mexican citizen that shows up at our border is deserving of asylum. You can't have it both ways. |
| And there is a huge seaweed problem there so some days you can't even swim in the ocean or stroll on the beach without it smelling. |
Actually yes you can. In the same way that the United States is a beautiful, safe country full of warm lovely people yet has the highest homicide rate in the industrialized world. |
This is the only reason we haven't been to the Cancun/Riviera side of Mexico in the last few years. They have a huge problem with sargassum - looks like seaweed, stinks and has bugs in it. It clears up at times but it's unpredictable when it returns from the flow of the ocean. https://www.locogringo.com/akumal-beach-webcam/ We go to Mexico and enjoy it. Just lately we've been to Huatulco, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Cabo is nice too - more Americanized and expensive. I research on tripadvisor before we go - read the forum as well as reviews. Grand Oasis is a budget all inclusive. |
| Just got back from Riviera Maya a couple of weeks ago. Stayed at the Iberostar Grand and had a wonderful time, although it rained the ENTIRE time we were there. Staff was top notch, food was good. I had zero concerns about my safety at any time. Just make smart decisions and your safety won't be an issue. Have also heard great things about the Fairmont and Rosewood Mayakoba...fairmont had some great deals recently. |
I went through Cancun a week after all of those murders, and can't say I felt like it was dangerous. That said we just flew there to get to Tulum, which I liked a lot more. Go there instead

Re: seaweed issue. This happened to DH and I a few years ago when we went to Playa del Carmen. The previous time we'd been there was a few years before and the beaches were pristine. But that time, there was mounds and mounds and thick seaweed everywhere. It was disgusting. We were so disappointed. So we went online to see if there were any beaches that didn't have it. We read on a forum to go to Cozumel. So we took the ferry out there and went to Mr. Sanchos beach club. No seaweed in sight! I guess the way they are situated on the mainland facing side of the island, they are insulated from the flow of the seaweed. The water there was crystal clear, you could see all the way to the bottom, fish and everything. So we went there like 2 or 3 days in a row. Saved our trip! |
Why should they calm down when they are describing things that happened to them? That’s a really weird request on your part. |
