And there is a huge seaweed problem there so some days you can't even swim in the ocean or stroll on the beach without it smelling.
This is the only reason we haven't been to the Cancun/Riviera side of Mexico in the last few years. They have a huge problem with sargassum - looks like seaweed, stinks and has bugs in it. It clears up at times but it's unpredictable when it returns from the flow of the ocean. https://www.locogringo.com/akumal-beach-webcam/ We go to Mexico and enjoy it. Just lately we've been to Huatulco, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Cabo is nice too - more Americanized and expensive. I research on tripadvisor before we go - read the forum as well as reviews. Grand Oasis is a budget all inclusive.
Re: seaweed issue. This happened to DH and I a few years ago when we went to Playa del Carmen. The previous time we'd been there was a few years before and the beaches were pristine. But that time, there was mounds and mounds and thick seaweed everywhere. It was disgusting. We were so disappointed. So we went online to see if there were any beaches that didn't have it. We read on a forum to go to Cozumel. So we took the ferry out there and went to Mr. Sanchos beach club. No seaweed in sight! I guess the way they are situated on the mainland facing side of the island, they are insulated from the flow of the seaweed. The water there was crystal clear, you could see all the way to the bottom, fish and everything. So we went there like 2 or 3 days in a row. Saved our trip!
