| Travel warnings are dramatic but several people I know that have gone said it's been totally fine |
| No. Not worth the risk. The people you know were lucky. Do you want to be the one? Go to a luxury resort in the Caribbean. |

I will never return to Cancun after the last trip we had there. It was supposedly a "nice" resort, but the staff stole money from our room and then tried to call the police on US when we refused to let them search our own room for the money so they could prove to us they didn't take it and that we had misplaced it. When we checked in, they also said my daughter was young enough that she didn't need a band on her wrist (it was an all-inclusive) and so she went the entire time with no wrist band and then at check out they told us we couldn't leave the resort until we paid them for her. They claimed we "hid" her when we checked in. They literally surrounded our taxi with employees so we couldn't leave. I paid by credit card but easily disputed the charges and we were never charged, but this was considered an upscale place.
I will never, ever return there. |

PP, what place was this? Sound like a nightmare.
We will not go to Mexico right now. Just not worth the risk. |
| We went to the Ritz in Cancun back in March and had a great time with the kids. You all need to calm down. |

Friend of mine just returned from Cancun this past weekend. She enjoyed her stay there (was there for work event) and reported no particular safety issues. She stayed on the resort the entire 5 days. She said the food sucked and the beach wasn't pretty, was full of seaweed they had to haul away by repeat truckloads everyday.
Needless to say, I wasn't impressed and won't be visiting. |
Grand Oasis. |

We went to Cancun during spring break with our elementary school aged kids. No drama. No issues. The weather was fantastic. We left the resort for dinner every night and took the local bus (gasp!) to get there and back. Didn't feel an ounce of danger throughout the resort or outside the resort.
We aren't big drinkers so the tainted alcohol issue was not a big concern for us. YMMV |
| A friend of mine just returned. She and her DH got drinks at their upscale resort. She wasn't felling well and didn't drink hers, but her husband's was drugged. It ruined their vacation. |
| No. Most people WILL be fine, but some will not. |
This kind of shakedown is very common in Mexico. Sorry for your crappy trip. |
| Nope, never will go. Plenty of other options -- Caribbean, DR, CR, Florida. |
|
Not right now. I might be back in the future but there are plenty of other places in the world to visit.

+1 Same for us. We had a great time just a few weeks back in Playa del Carmen. Use your judgment and don't get crazy drunk and you will be fine. |
| This thread comes up weekly in this forum. Half the respondees will say Mexico is warm and beautiful and that the tourist zones are just as safe as most American cities. The other half will say, yuck, Mexico, I would never set foot in that country, and my DH/cousin/uncle is in law enforcement and he says the entire country of Mexico is bad and that a big wall should be built between our two countries. |
