Looking at UVA's SIS online class search, for this fall I pulled up chemistry, biology, history, political science, psychology. Seems most 100- and 200-level courses have enrollments of 96, 140, 245, 360, 480 students.
Do any top 20 privates have classroom enrollments like that? |
Yes of course. 100-200 level classes are typically intro or general requirement classes. They are typically bigger in size. Once you are admitted to a major, then classes become smaller. |

UVA is a great safety school. But foot many it's a reach, so you don't actually have to make her feel bad about that. Try some compassion.
UVA has such an elitist attitude it is such a turn off, when my friends daughter was recruited for sports and she asked why she would want to go there over other schools their only answer was "because we are UVA" it was pathetic. All the other schools were all about community engagement, internships, volunteerism, mental health, academic support. UVA was, "we are UVA" |
I have no affiliation with Maryland, just a person calling out the ignorant and casual racism. |
| Assuming OP really is this clueless how to deal with a very basic problems, just tell the other mom that you are teaching your child to wait until she has all the information available before making a decision. So you want her to wait until she has heard from all schools and then evaluated all of her options before making her choice. She can think about all the pros and cons of going to UVA now while waiting for the other responses. Then compare them. |
What's the big god damn deal? Ignore and move on. Or did you just want to come on here and brag about the "better" schools your kid got into? JFC. |
| Op doesn't need to explain why her kid is still looking at other options. |
oh please tell. Where's the racism? |

Virginia has a much better selection of colleges than Maryland does.

| This thread cracked me up because years ago, at a nova big box hs reception, I faced a similar mom. My daughter was between UVA and Wharton undergrad and chose Wharton. A UVA uber alles mom, whose son was going to UVA (the son was friends with my daughter) sneered at me (and my daughter) and made a bitchy remark about cost. Wharton was simply my daughter’s top choice and we made it happen. |
|
Op, this is all about you dying to show your child's superiority.
It is killing you that you weren't able to slam the other mom to the ground, put your foot on her midsection, raise your arms above your head, and loudly proclaim to the world that you, through your careful editing and shaping, created this superior child. |

Agree. But maybe "UVA Mom" was simply reacting to the financial luck. $23K instate compared to 65-81K private in after tax dollars is a huge amount of dough. We feel very fortunate to have access to the in-state Virginia schools. |
I guess it depends on how you and your kid made Wharton happen. Not everyone is in the position to make things happen at OOS schools. Personally, I think that Virginia has a nice selection of beautiful schools with awesome college towns to choose from. |
