??? Perhaps, but a relationship between a 17 year old and a 24 year old is not one of them.

It is. Armie Hammer’s character uses grooming techniques:

The only “grooming technique” this mentions is asking what he’s thinking. I’m not saying it isn’t true, I’m just saying that isn’t what that article is about.

I have thought this too. I’m surprised it’s getting so much praise considering how Hollywood has gone all in on the Me Too movement. The age difference is gross and inappropriate.

Nonsense. Age of consent in Europe, is 14-16. Only the Vatican City in Italy has it at 18 and they definitely were not there.

Idiot.

I think what made it creepy is that the 17 year old actor looks much younger ( like 15, even though he is in his 20s) and the older actor looks much older than 24 ( because he is) Personally, people talk about the "attraction" those two had but, I didn't see it. Book displayed more compatibility and I didn't like the changes from the book.

Is he 17 or in his 20s?

I do agree that someone in their mid-teens with someone in their mid-20s is inappropriate, even if it is legal in some places. I'd cut them a little bit of slack since this was apparently portraying an era when homosexuality was more taboo and you didn't have Grinder to easily find age-appropriate guys who were ready to go. Also, when are already cast as a sexual "deviant" by society, it becomes much easier to start doing even more "deviant" things. I think this sort of age difference would be less common in gay circles today.

The actor is 22 but he plays a 17 year old ( Timothee Chalomet? sp )and he looks about 15.

Why do people keep saying this? I don’t agree at all. He looks 17.

It's the persistent use of the technique. A kid feels validated and listened to.

In Clueless, Cher is 15 and Josh is in his early 20s -- probably 20 or 21, since we know he's in college, preparing to go to law school.

I found the movie (despite the beauty that abounds) very disturbing and actually walked out after about getting through. half of it.

THIS! This is always the example I use when people are icked out by this. And as much as people seem to want to ignore it, sorry but things just WERE different for gay kids in the 80s. You might be 24 and only have been out for a hot minute, you might have seen a lot of this 17-24,25,26 year age gap because many young men were kind of on the same page emotionally/WRT to relationship maturity as far as how much they had even explored relationships, particularly if you lived in more conservative settings.

People want this movie to be not OK because much if it isn't OK now. That's fair. But sometimes we evolve into a better society not ONLY from a place where things were wrong/nefarious but from a place where things were just different and less than ideal. Its not so black and white.

Comparisons to Ray Moore's activities of yesterday are intentionally obtuse, and that's BS

I think this is part of the American infantilizing of young adults. 17 is not a child, although I agree that a 17 year old having a relationship with a 24 year-old might not be ideal.

In any case I thought Timothee's acting was excellent, but that Armie Hammer's was not very convincing. All in all a good film, though they could have cut it by ten minutes.

Loved the movie and love Armie Hammer. That guy is gorgeous.

Then you are warped. Or live in the bible belt, or maybe both.

No that’s pretty spot on. An influence operation disguised as “art”.

Cher is 16 because she takes the driver's test. Josh is supposed to be a freshman in college:

Half the people I knew entering college were planning on law/grad school from day 1.

Yeah, I'm getting tired of people making comments like this. If you stood him next to an actual 15 year old, he would clearly be older. Most 22-year-olds don't look like Tim Tebow did when he was 22.

I'm the poster who said he looked 15. I don't know why this is getting under your skin pps. Of course if I was standing next to him I would think he was older ( also because he apparently is 6 feet tall) but, he is young looking and Hollywood is great at making young people look younger. Honestly, some 17 year olds look like they are 15 and there is nothing wrong with that. Some 15 year olds look way older. Look at how they treat Millie Bobby Brown and dress her up to make her look like she is in her 20s.

btw, I have a 20 year old and a 16 year old and they both look younger than their age. Most people think my 20 year old looks 15. Last thing, because Hollywood likes younger looking actors to play young characters it is better for the actor to be 22 and look 15. Ralph Macchio anyone?

He does look young:

I'd believe it if someone told me he was 15.
