Taking friend to Costco

Anonymous
You're allowed to purchase costco gift cards and non-
Members are allowed to use them. Just have your friend give you money for a gift card so they can shop at Costco without you.

I have brought my sister with me. She was buying things for a party and would never use a membership. They had no problem with it and neither did I. Why are people so upset about OP sharing her membership?

Gaming the system ruins it for everyone. I’m not sure what’s so difficult about following the rules??

**if cashier says hey, this isn’t your card, then at this point you say you are together. If cashier is not ok then worst case, you pay for everything on your card and your friend writes you a check. You can ask cashier to hit subtotal between friend’s stuff and yours.

Just make sure your friend doesn't buy alcohol, which will trigger carding. My former roommate and I used to share a card, but I could only use it if I didn't buy alcohol for this reason.

Luckily, in some state one can buy alcohol without membership, like Arizona, NY, California and several others.

Weird question. I also have a rule that you must give me $55 a year

How is it gaming the system? You are present during the transaction, you are purchasing the items. Costco allows you to bring guests. It's not like it's a super convenient activity, buying Costco cash card is much easier. That's how people handle sending household employees to Costco without membership.

Doesn’t change the fact that you’re attempting to screw Costco.

Different poster, but this is exactly what Costco allows guests. They are hoping the guest will get a membership. It is helping Costco, not hurting it.

Except that isn’t OP intention. She specifically asked for tips on sneaking her friends stuff past the checker

OP, people can use Costco optical and the pharmacy without being members if your friend needs to price-shop.

Costco allows you to bring guests. It is completely OK for you to use your membership card and let her buy her groceries and pay for them herself. It is not cheating Costco in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM. Costco allows this because it is inconvenient to always have to go shop with a friend and the people often end up getting their own membership. IT IS FINE.
Costco also lets nonmembers go to the membership desk and get a one day pass to shop there! They know their business and are obviously successful with this. Don't worry about them, Costco is doing FINE. Ha ha.

+1
By law (in most states costco has to do this).

It's not being snide to point out that memberships are sold by Costco for a reason. The reduced prices are intended for those who've paid a yearly membership fee.

I suspect this is one poster. Not only is this normal, but Costco does not care. They let guests in. They are selling more stuff. They hope more people will join. Costco membership gets people access to a lot more stuff (cars, home loans, tires, vacation packages, online sales) and I guarantee you that no one in Costco management is going to feel ‘gamed’ by you shopping with your friend. So don’t let this weird person make you feel guilty.

Do they still do this? A friend asked at the Wheaton Costco and they were asked to buy a membership but told they could return it if not satisfied.

If she is very low income, she probably shouldn’t be buying alcohol, period.

Not your business.
