I didn't really get the reason for this episode - except for there to be a war (and more war and more war and more war). not really sure it would have mattered if I missed it.

I think this episode was setting up the moral/ethical conflict down the road about what to do with the Saviors after they destroy Negan. It's easy to say in the abstract that they should all be killed, but what about when that Savior is also just a dad trying to protect his baby (much like Rick and others have protected Judith)? What about when the Savior is someone who used to be on your side, and you don't know what brought him to be part of the Saviors? What about when the Savior is someone who was brought there against his will and forced to serve them to protect his family? On the flip side, it's also easy to say they should show mercy to anyone who's willing to lay down their weapon and surrender, but what happens when the person is faking to get an opportunity to kill you? Can you trust the guy who has laid down his weapon, but is still trying to verbally provoke you? What about the guy who was on your side when you last saw him, but was unwilling to consider that you might not need to be an enemy now? There's going to be a lot of internal reckoning within the group when the battle is done.

I'm the pp you quoted and I agree with what you're saying. It makes sense. the conflict that you start to see with Jesus and whats-her-name is the beginning of it. But, that was only a small part of this episode.

In thinking about it more, I am wondering if a lot of us were unimpressed with this episode because Negan didn't appear at all.

I am still totally hooked on the show, I just didn't like this episode too much.

I am also conflicted with Negan. There's a big part of me that wants him dead. I am rooting for the others and want it to go back the way it used to be with Rick (and the others) winning these smaller battles with groups that could come and go (with usually one or 2 of the "enemy" joining rick's group).

OTOH, I am absolutely LOVING Negan's character. I love the actor and love the way Negan talks, his body language and his whole dynamic and what he brings to the show.

So I am conflicted about how the writers are going to keep Negan in the show but still let Rick and the others rise again.

We are done. Done. This is a mess. This episode consisted of people with guns shooting guns at each other, interspersed with montages of peoples' faces. And the whole thing had no narrative that I understood in terms of plot or sequence. I kept asking DH if it was possible that we missed an episode because, where were Gabriel and Negan? Why did I not recognize so many of these people? Why did this plan make no sense?

This is basically a video game at this point. No narrative. No plot. No tension. Just people shooting guns and sweating and bleeding.

I feel similar. I DVR’d this episode and basically fast forwarded everything until there was dialogue between people. Maybe actually only watched about ten minutes. Not live watching anymore of TWD. It’s a waste.

Last season fans complained there was not enough action. So this season they tried to bump up the action to please fans but they took it too far. I am not impressed with the first two episodes, just seems like endless gun fights and the multiple flash forwards happening within a single episode are confusing. I am predicting the next two episodes will be more of the same since Gimple has promised that the first 4 episodes are non-stop action. Praying episode 5 is better

I liked last night's episode a little bit better. I loved the fighting scene with Jesus and Morgan. Wow. Basically the two men who are the best at hand-to-hand combat fighting and I loved how Jesus kept saying "are we done now?"

The Governor. I can't believe someone so vile is just talking his way into any camp that is "on top" and will BS his way in. He's like .... oh...what's his name.... the scientist-like guy that is with the Saviors now and gave sasha the pills to kill herself. Basically just doing whatever he needs to to survive - flip flopping.

Loved the scene with Rick and Darryl.

And WOW how it ended with the King!

War is war. We are going to see a war for several episodes, I think.

Governor has been dead for about 5 seasons. I think you mean Gregory. Big difference.

Yes, you're right. I forgot about the Governor (eye patch guy, right?) I guess since Hilltop I just put it in my head that Gregory was a governor. Thanks for catching that.

Aaron and Jesus? Is Jesus gay?
