Obviously you know precisely dick about explosive chemistry. Thermite is about as explosive as bubblegum.

You're correct I know nothing about chemistry. You don't have to be rude. Thank you for the information. It still doesn't seem like it should be legal to be digging holes underground in a crowded suburban neighborhood. (Houses on that street are very close together.) I'm not an engineer, but it seems like that might destabilize your own property or neighboring properties. Based on the limited information available in the news articles, he does not seem stable and it does not seem like he was engaging in safe activities.

How does this shed light on the story?

Yeah - right next to NIH & Walter Reed. Sure, they meant no harm at all. Terrorists are only from other countries.

By "right next to", you mean, "near"?

Next to A's in one block from parts, several blocks from other parts. You couldn't get a house much closer.
It wouldn't seem strange except for the tunnels.

Do you have any idea of thr volume of dirt you would have to remove and haul away to make a man-size tunnel long enough to tunnel into the NIH complex from that house?

It would need dozens of dump trucks to haul it away

Montgomery County can't say the area around Bethesda house is safe 5 months after tunnels were discovered underneath it because no one can get in.

This has doomsday prepping gone wrong all over it. Hoarding fits into that scenario.

it would be nice if the county would do this for all hoarders, order home demolished

NP. I suggest that the man has a strong interest in radioactive material and nuclear physics.

IF he was making his own reactor or experimenting with radiological sources, it’s probably better that he was doing it underground.... ugh.

I was coming here to post if anyone knew anymore about this story. Totally bizarre!

I agree with pp, what did the links upthread mean? Also what the heck is that picture of the bunker like space on his google page? There's no way that is what was under the house, but what is it supposed to be?

Why is anyone wasting any brain space wondering what this psycho was "thinking"? We're lucky that there was a fire to warn everyone about these wankers before they got up to really massive scale lethality. Dangerous idiots.

Don't you want to know what they were doing?

I want to know.

And "really massive scale lethality" ?? On what bases did you reach THAT conclusion?

By your logic, you made a crazy leap to "lethality," therefore you are mentally unstable, therefore YOU need to be locked up.

I wonder if the homeowner was some sort of survivalist /dooms-day prepper type? But if that is the case, why didn't they just move to W.Va or someplace remote?

I have a coworker who lives almost next door to this place.

He's been trying to sell his house on and off ever since this mess started. No one will make a serious offer. Before he took it off the market this last time, he lowered his asking price $200K and still had people offering another $200k less.

I'm kinda amused by it, because he's an a-hole. But I feel bad for other people in the same boat

Later articles don't make it sound like the man who died was a friend. He was hired to dig the tunnels. He told his friends that when he went to work, he was blindfolded and driven to the work location. He dug those tunnels thinking he was working in Virginia! Doesn't sound like "friends" to me. After the fire and death, and all the suspicious circumstances it's beyond me why the authorities aren't allowed to go in and inspect the tunnels. I'd be so up in arms if I were an immediate neighbor. This is absurd. If you do work on a house you need to get inspections and permits. Why would you be allowed to do whatever the fxck you please underground? No one even knows if his work was restricted to his own property. And even if it was, it could still affect neighbors in terms of earth stability and drainage and pests.
