| So many people should not have kids. |
I don’t think this kid’s backstory was SO bad that he couldn’t have made something of himself. Certainly others have survived and thrived after worse. |
I think it was the complete isolation. He didn't have friends or peers or ANYONE. 3 people came to his mother's funeral. That's not normal. He was raised in social quarantine and was incredibly sick mentally. But there was no one to even care, really ever, about his mental illness. I do think his backstory was that bad. He should still be punished for causing a death, but his back story is tragic. |
| Whatever happened to the surrounding houses? Did they ever figure out how extensive the tunnels went and whether there was any structural risk to other homes or yards. I would be terrified that my kids would be outside playing a sinkhole would open up from one of the idiot's tunnels collapsing after heavy rains/high water tables. |

Update, showing how this was a bit of a perfect storm - lack of support and nontraditional upbringing + online radicalization and paranoia.

People who survive and thrive after horrific childhoods like this with isolation and abuse usually have other things going for them and other supportive people in their lives. They often are also the ones who did not develop mental illness or addiction. It isn't just a personal choice one day as to whether or not you will choose to thrive and survive or not. |
