DC Shut out of privates: Cooper MS?

Anonymous
Check out St. Patricks. It's a K-8 so I doubt they get many applicants for 7th. Now would be the ideal time to check as about 1/3 of the class leaves after 6th and things may be in flux for the next two weeks.

Private schools are likely to have more drugs, since their students have more money. It's just that no one collects data on drug incidents at the private schools.

Cooper has the demographics of a private school, so it has more drugs that a typical area public school. That's just a fact.

The above is also a fact.

There is no "TJ feeder part "of Fairfax. That is not a thing.

What's the average class size at Cooper?
How much homework is the average kid doing per night?

I heard about 1.5 hrs per night for 6th graders at Churchill ES, which seems like a lot. Does it get more or stay steady at Cooper?

My son never has that much homework at Cooper, nor did he have that much at Colvin Run Elementary.

Is he a fast worker? My son isn't, and his homework takes forever sometimes. (we're at Churchill now)

I have had three kids go through Cooper and one who is in 7th grade there right now. It's a great school full of smart, fun, compassionate kids and teachers. Highly recommend it.

OML. Did you not read the stats in 00:43?? Let me reiterate: Cooper had ONE drug incident in 2012, compared to many more at Kilmer, Longfellow, and Carson. Those of you trying to paint Cooper as something it's not are ridiculous.

I know Cooper parents who are concerned about drugs in the MS (and have kids whose peers are into drugs), Thoreau parents who are concerned about bullying (and have kids who were badly bullied). We are in the TJ feeder part of Western FFX which has a reputation for hyperintense, super competitive tiger parents. And guess what? The school has a cohort of hyperintense, super competitive tiger parents.

Deny it all you want, but even the "best" FCPS MSs have a downside, and can do better.

Why don't you give us the name of your middle school? We'll look it up on that handy-dandy link and find out exactly what problems your school has. I imagine it goes a lot farther than just "competitive tiger parents."

I sent three kids through Thoreau, including one with special needs. I never heard of any bullying there. I thought it was a terrific school.

Are you the one claiming there is a "drug problem" at Cooper?

My daughter went to both of those schools and had very little homework at each.

Are you referring to Rocky Run, PP? If so, their record doesn't look so good. "Offenses Against Persons" - 20 in the last five years, in addition to 6 drug incidents and 15 disorderly or disruptive behavior incidents. Ouch. Looks like there's more going on than simply competitive parents.

I suggest that before you slam a school for a non-existent drug problem, you check out the problems within your own school.

All this tells me is that the school doesn't report incidents.
