Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
OMG. Are you referring to the ONE incident, many years ago?? I've had kids there for the past five years and there is no "drug reputation." Thanks for spreading baseless rumors.
|
Ah yes. 1 drug incident in 2012. Go ahead and look up Kilmer: 3 drug incidents in 2012, 1 in 2013, and 1 in 2014. 10 offenses against persons in 2012, 8 in 2013, and 14 in 2014. Longfellow? 5 drug incidents in 2012. 19 offenses against other persons in 2012, 9 in 2013, and 5 in 2014. Carson? 45 incidents against other persons in 2012 alone. Thanks for providing that link, PP! It's very useful to see just how good Cooper looks in comparison to most other middle schools. |
that thread is from 2011. |

My kids will be headed to Cooper as well. Grateful to hear that things are going well from the families with kids at the school on this thread. Any concerns?
|
| I have a current student at Cooper now, a Cooper graduate and a rising 7th grader. You will love Cooper -- it has a warm environment and caring administration and faculty. Ignore the trolls above. |
| Cooper will well prepare them for 'high' school. |
| The enrollment of Cooper is set to increase over the next several years as Kilmer and Longfellow are phased out as AAP options for Cooper students. Then, once the bump-up in enrollment has occurred, the school's renovation will start in earnest (around 2020). |
| It will still be under-enrolled overall. Class size should remain nice-sized. |
hehehe |
Class size doesn't depend on whether the school is under-capacity. FCPS just pulls teachers from under-enrolled schools and sends them to schools with more kids. |
| Private schools are likely to have more drugs, since their students have more money. It's just that no one collects data on drug incidents at the private schools. |
| Cooper is a fine school but determining whether it is an idea fit your DC is a different analysis. Yes she can get a great education and yes she may be miserable.there are four options here. |
Cooper has the demographics of a private school, so it has more drugs that a typical area public school. That's just a fact. |

Sometimes schools live up (or down) to their reputation. I know Cooper parents who are concerned about drugs in the MS (and have kids whose peers are into drugs), Thoreau parents who are concerned about bullying (and have kids who were badly bullied). We are in the TJ feeder part of Western FFX which has a reputation for hyperintense, super competitive tiger parents. And guess what? The school has a cohort of hyperintense, super competitive tiger parents.
Deny it all you want, but even the "best" FCPS MSs have a downside, and can do better. |
I sent three kids through Thoreau, including one with special needs. I never heard of any bullying there. I thought it was a terrific school. |
