Guest room sheet etiquette poll

+1 to all of this.

We only have guests a couple times a year. If I washed right away, I'd have to wash again when guests arrived because the bed would get kind of dusty after no use for several months. This way, the barely used sheets are left on there and washed right before the guests arrive so they can have a fresh bed.

I can't tell you how many times I have told my in-laws to please leave the sheets on the bed. But FIL keeps stripping it and putting the whole mess on top of the washer which means I have to drop everything and wash them right away because they are blocking me from doing other laundry. And then the bed sits there unmade and gathering dust until the next visit.

OP here. Yes that's the issue. I just don't have time to do the laundry and put the sheets on the bed right now, so they've been sitting in the tiny laundry room. We will have another guest for Thanksgiving and I want the sheets to be fresh for them. Maybe I'm the only one that likes the fresh laundry smell though.

You could have started the load in the time you have been complaining.
It doesn't take long.

The point is that my guest is mandating that I must wash his dirty sheets RIGHT NOW and I can't do any other laundry until it's done. IMO the guests are wrong for forcing dirty laundry in my face.

Also, who lets their guests sleep in a bed that hasn't been washed for 6 months. Do you know how much dust has accumulated on that bed?

NP here and I think it is strange you can't just put the dirty sheets back in the room until you are ready to wash them, I live in a small apartment and can find room for the other laundry that isn't a priority. Getting all bent out of shape for guest trying to be good guest is silly, if it really bothers you tell them not to strip the bed next time. Also how does dust accumulate if the sheets are made- the comforter regardless would collect dust but the sealed "fresh" bed stays that way once made properly...

Yet doing an extra load of laundry is really no big deal.

It's not that it's hard. It that I'm forced to do it immediately when I could do it next week or next month. It isn't even close to a priority but I've been forced to make it one. And I don't know why the health status of your children has any importance to this task. It doesn't make you a better person than me.

Because we spend a chunk of time at home doing all her therapy exercises. I can't just sit watching tv and folding laundry while we're doing those. That's why it's relevant.

You are NOT forced. We've done one load of laundry while a few dirty things are on top of the washer. There's no reason you can't just let it sit. You're finding problems where there are none. I think you just don't like your in-laws or whoever visited.

It's a top loading washer in a laundry closet so there is no place to put dirty sheets when I'm doing other laundry. It must be done immediately. I don't think you really how snotty you sound about your child's needs.

There's no comforter, only blankets and I put those away so they don't gather dust. I would like the sheet to stay on the bed until it's ready to be washed to keep the dust off the mattress. No, I don't have a lot of dust but it does gather on things that aren't touched for months. I'm not going to remake a bed with a dirty sheet so I wash the sheet, remake the bed, and then wash the sheet again before guests arrive. It's a waste of time, energy, and water.

I tell them every time to leave the bedding and don't strip the bed. They're not rude, just forgetful.

Okay, just offering you some suggestions. Maybe stop having guest cause it seems to stress you out and you are making a bigger deal out a a sheet issue than it needs to be. Also, I wasn't saying put the dirty sheets back on the bed- just stash the pile somewhere till you are ready. I can't see getting mad at folks for trying to help, yes I see that you see it as unhelpful, not sure what else to tell you

I want fresh from the laundry smell on my sheets for my guests. I hate old cotton smell. I prefer if guests ask me if they should strip the bed. I prefer they don't.

Guests should have sheets that have been washed recently and not months ago, regardless of whether the sheets were left on the bed after the last visit (which is fine).

This! Clean sheets are in the linen closet. Bed gets made right before guests arrive. Coverlet on bed between guests. Sheets washed after guests leave.

C, I do both!

Also, I usually ask guests not to bother stripping the bed because sometimes it takes me a few days to have the time to remake the bed. It kind of annoys me when the strip it, after I ask them not to do it.

oh and I also do the same "c" with the guest towels.

Love it when guests strip sheets and fake make the bed. They get invited back!
