What is your honest opinion on undocumented immigrants?

Anonymous
Having read most of the posts, it's obvious that you are mostly all East Coast residents and haven't been affected by undocumented immigrants like the rest of us in the West. I could sit here and list a thousand issues with them but all I'd get would be people calling me a racist for speaking honestly.

Until you've lived with this problem everyday, you have an uneducated opinion.

Illegals pay taxes. I have been illegal TWICE! Paid taxes both times. Can say same about my sister and 2 of my closest friends. We all paid taxes and did the tax return and all. All had SS number of our own, but I know plenty of people with tax payer ID numbers. Don't know anybody who uses somebody else's number. Quickest way to get in trouble.
No speaky English? Big deal. It's not an official language here.
Americans don't speak Spanish though it's 2nd language here and an easy language to learn. I did, why can't Americans learn it and stop calling it the Mexican language.
Breaking the law? What law? The laws of Native Americans? Who broke those? Doesn't count because it was so long ago? The nerve some have.
Many of the Latinos and their ancestors lived in the Americas way before Columbus showed up and before white man started to draw up borders here.
Also, read about all the "good" the USA has done in South and Central America (and elsewhere in the world) to help create the violence people are trying to escape.
You have enough workers? We can't find workers to work for $15-$25 in DC, not to mention to fill the minimum wage positions.
Why not see and read why the illegal immigration is the way it is and who is to blame if you want to blame somebody.
Want to talk about your feeling then talk to your shrink. Illegal immigrants are money for America. They are money for you, OP. You can choose not to see or believe it, but that's why they are here to stay.

I've known undocumented immigrants from France, Poland, the former Soviet Union, Ireland, and Latin America. They all worked hard, knew English, and came here seeking greater opportunities than they'd had at home -I assume most undocumented immigrants are similar.

If only I were well-educated enough to be a bigot!

"This problem" ? You'd have this problem even if they were not illegal. The problem for you is that they are different and do things differently. Big problem.
You and I do things differently, definitely think differently. Big problem again since I don't like stupid people. There are only 3 races. Careful where you put the Latinos. I have a feeling you mark the same box as most Latinos. I can speak honestly too- you are not a racist, you are an idiot.

People who have never gone through the legal process to immigrate to America do not appreciate the trouble legal immigrants have to go through just to get student or work visas and eventually permanent status. Many of us who did things legally are baffled at why it is okay for some people to break the rules and expect to be rewarded for it.
Many of us also come from countries with less than ideal living situations.
Either maintain the same rules for everyone or abolish the USCIS and throw America's doors wide open to everyone.

Not poor Americans. Why do you think the illegal immigrants came here in the first place? Poor white and black American men weren't lining up to build houses or work in kitchens or clean our houses.

I feel sorry for them, because I assume they're here illegally escaping bad circumstances, but my own family experience also colors my opinion. My mother married a man from another country, and she went through a lot of stress, money, and paperwork to become a legal resident of that country. The rules are for everyone, and it's not fair to people like my mom who followed them when others skip over them.

We are a nation of laws. And, those laws include outlining how someone comes into our country.
Those who enter illegally, or overstay their visas are breaking those laws.

So, my opinion of them is of law breakers. I am sure that some of them are good people, but they have broken our laws.
It is essential for the US, in order to maintain security at home, to know who is coming into our country.
With the amount of illegal immigration we currently have, it is only a matter of time before we have a large-scale attack from those here illegally.

This is the top of my list for the election this year. And, it appears that I am not alone.

With that attitude English should be made the official language. Blame the USA for the problems in South and Central America? If they were stable great places then the USA would never have had any invlvement but tourists.

Anonymous wrote:Ever seen the movie "A Day without a Mexican"? I think illegal immigrants to a large extent, and recent immigrants legal or otherwise, are the foundation of our way of life. They build our homes, prepare and serve our food, deliver our goods, install and fix our appliances, babysit our children and clean up after us everywhere we go.

Without them, we would want to immigrate somewhere else.

Or, without them Americans would do all of the jobs, just like they did before. Only 4% of illegal immigrants do field work. 85% of construction workers are Americans. We have a very high unemployment rate amongst the poor and uneducated that are directly competing with illegal immigrants. We would be absolutely fine.

Well, perhaps then the wages we have to pay to entice them into jobs would have to go up? Isn't that a good thing for income inequality? Or are solutions for this only good if they're mandidated by the government?

I'm for pro immigration and anti illegal immigration.

Me too. I work with many Hispanic emigres both legal and illegal, but mostly legal. They seem to be decent, nice people who are here purely for economic reasons. Most are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru. They would love to live in their countries but came here purely for jobs. I identify with them a tiny bit because I was an economic emigre to Washington from a very poor US town with no job prospects. I would love to have stayed in my home town, but had to come to DC for work. Once here, I made it my home. They are just trying to do the same. I also deal with the second generation of hispanic emigres who are moving up the economic ladder. It's what my family did 100 years ago, and I think most immigrants will do the same.
