Lighten up Francis, everyone suffers - tithe or no. Just because/if we've been financially blessed doesn't mean we don't have horrible things happen as well.

Yes -- god may provide finanical blessings to those who tithe, but he also give them cancer and burns their houses down.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8: "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."

My brain is paralyzed by the almost innumerable snarky things this post deserves as a response.

I'm a different poster - but I just have to throw this in. We joined a new church within the past year and for the first time in our married lives, we're both fully on board. We love the church, it's mission, the pastor, the familes, etc. We both felt God lead us to tithing, even though I write the checks monthly rather than weekly, because it was still a little hard to say goodbye to that much money. My point is, that we both wanted to tithe here, but it is still a mental struggle sometimes. In any case, though, like the PP, we have been blessed financially over and over since we have joined this church. Is it the tithing? Being more connected to the church? Luck? I have no idea. I do like to believe that as we entrust God with our finances, he rewards us and makes sure we are provided for. Like PP, we have received many financial rewards such as several thousand dollar credit card refund, unexpected checks and pay raises. I'm not saying oh, go tithe and be rewarded - but rather, trust God and you will be taken care of.

Snark away...

So God blesses you, but those starving people in the Congo, they just aren't getting with the program, is that it?

IF the starving gave 10% of their meager possessions, God would bless tem too. But are they doing that? Doubtful -- they're just scrounging around for food instead
Is that not the prosperity gospel? Or are you preaching Karma?

Cod invented churches so ministers could make a living by people giving to the church thinking they were pleasing god and being convinced when good things happened to them, not thinking about all the horrible things happening to other people who are good christians, but who cannot afford to tithe. Your goal should be to donate 10% of what you earn, dont think too hard about net or gross. However, It doesnt all have to be to the Church. If you donate to other charities you can include that too. I probably donate about 5% total not 10%

I had a friend many years ago that was struggling with 2 kids and driving a school bus. She gave 10% to her Mormom Church every week. When I asked why she did it when she obviously needed the money herself she told me that its very easy for all of us to say that we need the money ourselves, and where do you draw the line. She also said that she knew that if she needed help, the Church would help her. So if she couldnt pay her rent ( didnt happen as far as I know) she could go to them and know they would help her out.

Would your wife feel better if you specified that the money go to specific programs within the church? Pastor's discretionary fund, or the homeless ministry, or religious education, etc...

It was insurance, then. A quid pro quo - not an actual gift.

Why does God need money? Of what value is money to Him/Her?

God only needs the money for people to worship him here on earth in churches. In heaven there is no money.

God doen't get the money. CHurches are built with it and pastors are paid with it. CHurches also do charity work with the poor. If God did have money, surely he would give it to those in need, but he doesn't have money, so counts on his worhipers to collect it and give it out.

Abraham gave 10% of the war booty to God. He did not give 10% of everything he had to live on.
If you want to be like Abraham, go to war and give 10% of th stolen loot to a temple priest

She's half the team. And it has to be a consensus decision. If she says no, the answer's no.

If you feel guilty, step up your volunteering. But leave your wife's decision alone.
