By saying he was retired I meant that he didn't have to go to a job. He runs, works out at a boutique fitness place in Bethesda, and does yoga. Not buying the heart explanation. I think the pp who said it was the challenge with OCD has got it right.

And with all this specific info, someone is going to figure out who he is and tell him someone is judging him on the internets!!

Yes- and what a judgmental b____ he has as a neighbor!

+1 Admit you were wrong to judge/dismiss, OP, and move on. Anyone who has experience shoveling snow knows that this is the way to do it (regardless of heart disease, age, back problems, etc., although those would certainly be more reason to do it) if you are going to get close to 2 feet of snow. You asked, "why did he do this," but didn't have an open mind to any of the answers. Also, I don't know what it was like on your street, but he might have done it at 10 p.m. because there wasn't enough accumulation before then for it to make sense to get started. He may have been out doing it at 6:00 a.m. because it is a LOT easier to do it while the snow is still dry than a) when more has fallen, b) when it rains or melt a little and then re-freezes as ice. Whatever his reasons, just get over it.

Yep, We have a young retiree brigade on my court who practically race each other to shovel first, take in their garbage cans first, etc. One of them even sweeps the street. They are basically batshit crazy.

I love those types. Have one as a neighbor. He keeps tbe property value up and actually makes us more aware to keep on top of things.

You're complaining about this? These are good neighbors.

This.

Yes- and what a judgemental b____ he has as a neighbor!

Heh. Not sure who the more "anal" of the two is.

Since he's just "kitty-corner" why don't you try talking to him sometime. Maybe learn his name? Be a good neighbor.

Yeah that guy is crazy and so are the people on this thread OP. Notice none of them were woken up by a neighbor shoveling (which is really annoying and used to happen to me in my old house). What's the point of shoveling when it's snowing? Just hire someone! Your neighbor sounds rich.

+1. I totally get the shoveling in parts as the snow falls. It's completely OCD to do this in the middle of the night!

+1. It's also much safer if you are someone who is at an increased risk for a heart attack (such as, perhaps, a man old enough for retirement). You want smaller, lighter loads to take the stress off your heart.

+1

We planned to do this - before the wine.

My kid tells me this morning that neighbor woke him up too. Look out as soon as we are both up at 6:20am and see neighbor still shoveling. Why? There is nowhere he can go, and for context he's a retired guy in Bethesda. He's also super-anal about his yard. Orders a semi-truck of mulch every spring and spreads it himself. Very meticulous about leaf removal. I just don't understand people like this. I'm also annoyed at being woken up from the noise on one of the better sleeping days of the year. And for the record, his driveway is covered with snow and it will be snowing all day as well as blowing around too. I just don't understand people like this. Sisyphus and all....does he think he's going to outdo nature?

Sounds like a GREAT neighbor to me. Come the day you want to sell your house, you won't have to worry about the neighbors unkept house and yard ruining it for you.

So he shoveled last night and first thing this morning? That's not all night. Shoveling all night would be crazy. What your neighbor did is not crazy.

I wish I had shoveled at 10pm. Now it's 18 inches and blowing snow. Very unpleasant.

My 74-year old father has a snowblower. They only work when snow isn't too deep.

You do it in stages.

Everyone knows shoveling is easier when done in stages --/once it's piled up its back-breaking.

I shoveled last night. Not sure it made much difference. I walked the dog at around 10 and probably half my neighbors had shoveled their walks. Seems pretty normal.

I shoveled at 10pm last night, and it didn't make this morning any easier, if that makes you feel any better!
