I have no idea what this is |
| I'd definitely mispronounce Ayla (as the end of Kayla). I've only ever heard it that way, never as eye-la. |
Clan of the Cave Bear is a series of novels by -- well, I forget the author's name, but you can google it. I read one, which was plenty; I was not swept off my feet by Jondalar; and in general, I would pronounce Ayla to rhyme with Kayla. I would pronounce Isla I-la. If somebody pronounced it "EES-la", like in Spanish, then little Isla (or her parents) would say, "No, I-la, as in the Isle of Wight.", and that would solve that problem. |
That would be rude. |
Clan of the Cave Bear for me too! Remember Plains of Passion, I mean Passage and the Mammoth Hunters? I did like Ayla as a name though. |
Agreed, although I thought it would be "A-lah" (hard A). If you're thinking about sending her to school in a heavily Spanish-speaking area, you will definitely get the "Iss-lah" pronunciation much more from her classmates at first meeting. |
Don't be an idiot, I wouldn't mispronounce it if someone told me it was pronounced eye-la. But if I just saw it written, I'd say it the other way. |
| Sen. Scott Brown's daughter is Ayla, pronounced like the end of Kayla. |
|
What about just Ila? I think that's most likely to get pronounced correctly (or Eyla, but I like Ila better.) I would guess Ay-la for Ayla (plus Clan of the Cave Bear association) and Iz-la for Isla.
If you don't care about mispronunciations/misspellings, I'd say Isla over Ayla. |
|
I love both. In my circle of FB friends, I have two Islas and one Ayla. The Ayla has middle eastern parents, not sure if that makes a difference.
My DH is hispanic so I wouldn't use Isla, since that'd be "Izz-lah" in Spanish. But I love Ayla. Also love Clan of the Cave Bears so it's a good association for me. |
Couldn't name the kid Ayla... would always be thinking of Broud the Cro-Mag wanting it doggy style.

Aay-aah
|
Not me. I'd be thinking of Jondalar hitting that magic button. Or of Ranec, my introduction to interracial lovin'. |
I apologize, I'm the "that would be rude" PP, and for some reason I misread "definitely" for "deliberately" this morning. |

Ayla -- rhyme with HEY-la.
Isla -- rhymes with BIZ-la. (like Isla Fisher) If you want people to say EYE-la, I think your best bet is to spell it "Ayla" and get ready to correct people. A lot. |
