Ayla or Isla

Isla seems like the more obvious choice to me. I find it aesthetically quite lovely.

I like the names. I have never met anyone named Ayla who pronounced it like the ending of Kayla or Layla. But other posters have said that would be a concern and I think it'd be so annoying to always have people mispronounce/mishear/ask you/your daughter to repeat the name for her entire life. So, that said, I'd probably go w/ Isla since that's the more popular spelling. Or actually, I'd probably go w/ a different name altogether because people would mess Isla up too.

What about Lila?

I would go with Isla. Less confusion and much prettier I think.

+1 right down to the age and Clan of the Cave Bear reference.

Haha! Same here: 35 and it sounds like Clan of the Cave Bear!

My first thought, too. My second: Oh God, someone on the first page referred to us as "women of a certain age." Damn

No, that name is pronounced "Ee-la" not "Eye-la"

Ayla has my vote because means moonlight or moon halo and has such a charming history!

ISLA is definitely Eye-luh. I'm surprised people don't know how to pronounce this. Do PPs actually call Isla Fisher "IZluh"?

There’s an amazing movie released in 2017 called Ayla. You can watch the trailer on YouTube if you search “Ayla movie”.
After watching it you’d definitely know how Ayla should be pronounced. It’s a Turkish/Hebrew name spelled exactly how it should be spelled, as they use English alphabets in turkey too, and it’s pronounced Eye-luh. I know in English some people mispronounce it, but they just need to learn how some names are pronounced in other languages and respect that instead of insisting it should be said the way the prefer to read/say it!
Also you’d say “Aye” (Eye) in Scottish for yes- the Same sound goes for Ayla . Eye-luh.

This thread is five years old. I’m fairly sure OP has chosen a name as Ayla-Isla has started kindergarten.

I have seen it spelled both ways and pronounced Eye lah. I know several children with this name. It’s lovely.

Ayla reminds me of Layla or Kayla, which is also how most people will probably pronounce it.

Yes, if I saw Ayla I would assume it rhymes with Kayla.

Wow. I'm shocked at all these mid 30's people thinking Clan of the Cave Bear.
I'm in my mid 40's and wouldn't have thought of that. Clan of the Cave Bear was a book that my mom's generation read. I'm too young for that!

Isla was the 82nd most popular name in 2018, up from 141 in 2015.

Ayla was 189, up from 265.

Isla! Hands down

Clan of the Cave Bear was on my parents' bookshelf but Plains of Passage came out when I was in 6th grade and that's when I read it.

Ayla was awesome, she did everything, the original Mary Sue. It's not a bad reference.
