Ayla or Isla

Either choice is going to require a lifetime of pronunciation and spelling correction for you and your child. If that's what you're going for then either one works.

I would go with Isla. Less confusion and much prettier I think.

+1 right down to the age and Clan of the Cave Bear reference.

Haha! Same here: 35 and it sounds like Clan of the Cave Bear!

That would be rude.

Don't be an idiot, I wouldn't mispronounce it if someone told me it was pronounced eye-la. But if I just saw it written, I'd say it the other way.

I apologize, I'm the "that would be rude" PP, and for some reason I misread "definitely" for "deliberately" this morning.

Sorry for calling you an idiot, because if I deliberately mispronounced a name, that would be TOTALLY rude.

Ayla seems obvious to me. Very pretty. There's an Ayla character in House of Cards. She pronounces it eye-la

Because you've never mispronounced a totally obscure name that sounds nothing like how it's spelled?

I personally would think Isla was pronounced "Iss-la" and "Ayla" was pronounced "eye-lah". Based on the posts so far, I assume OP is going for "eye-lah".

I've never heard this name before, it's not like it's Jennifer.

I'm 39 and I have no idea what the hell you people are talking about.

Face it you are old. Your reference is obscure.

I think Ayla makes more sense for this country. If you spell it with an "I" you'll be getting Iz-la.

NP here. I'm 36 and that was my immediate thought too. Clan of the cave bear. Her peers won't think of it but lots of her peers' parents might

My daughter is Isla.

Two thoughts:

1. Its really not that big of a deal. People mispronounce even the most basic of names and so many names have multiple pronunciations anyway. Alicia can be A-LEE-sha or A-LISH-uh. You can name your child James and will have to correct people for calling him Jimmy. People will forget if your daughter is Danielle or Daniella. I've known people for years who all of a sudden spit out a derivation of my name, but not my actual name. Pick what you like, but just be prepared that people are morons.

2. Know that there are lots of little girls with this name. We are in Northern VA and are shocked at how many we've met just at the few playgrounds we go to. We knew it was in the 300's on the list when we named her, but didn't anticipate it would translate into so many right around here.

3. I've never heard of Clan of the Cave Bear.

I haven't read the whole thread so maybe already mentioned, but there is an Indian name (India Indian) which is transliterated as Ila with the same pronunciation.

Ila in Sanskrit means "earth".

forget who it was, but read in people or us weekly recently of a celebrity couple who named their daughter eyla vue (as in i love you)

Isla -- rhymes with BIZ-la. (like Isla Fisher)

If you want people to say EYE-la, I think your best bet is to spell it "Ayla" and get ready to correct people. A lot.

Except she pronounces it "EYE-la" too. I know three little Islas, all pronounced EYE-la.

+1 the name translates to island if you're ok with that
