Man Down: The Attack on American Masculinity

This article reduces a man's role to income earner and a woman's role to nurturer. You are doing a disservice to everyone if you limit the concepts of masculinity and femininity to those unbelievably narrow stereotypes.

This is true but consider also that matriarchy does not work well in terms of social outcomes- which means the white male should not be turned into a swagger wagon driver.

I don't think anyone is looking for matriarchy. People are looking for egalitarianism.

Yes, The Blaze is an independent news and entertainment television network and website founded by Glenn Beck. He calls it an alternative to "mainstream media outlets" which he believes are "distorting facts to fit rigid agendas."

Complete and total garbage.

Because Ta-nahesi Coates said so.

Because those in power have always been legitimate targets of mockery. It's only when you mock the downtrodden that people take offense.

Deal with it.

As a well educated, white, middle-class, male, I have to say that life isn't terribly difficult. Sure, I work hard, play by the rules, etc. But, in return, the world treats me pretty fairly -- more than fairly, for all I know.

I'm not going to feel guilty about any of this, but I'm sure as hell not going to whine because the Doug character on "King of Queens" is depicted as being dumber than his drop-dead, gorgeous wife that, in real life, a schlubby package delivery guy would not be married to.

My god. Fox News really does breed some incredible a-holes. I love that the message here is "Men are losing something. Women may have gained something in the past three decades (not true, BTW -- overall stats on progress are abysmal). Therefore, it stands to reason (because I have one brain cell, and it's steeped in Glenn Beck/Fox drivel) that the women may have taken the things men used to have. And therefore, women are taking from men.

There are various forces at work here, people. Are you having a hard time earning money for the family as a single income earner for the family? There's some reasons for that. Are you having a hard time earning money for the family as one of two income earners for the family? There are some reasons for that? Is child care a challenge, especially with two income earners for the family? Again, reasons. Have you been unemployed for months, maybe even years? Again, reasons.

There are plenty of folks who'd be THRILLED that people in the middle class, struggling to maintain -- or even attain -- the successes of their own parents turn to the people next to them (women, immigrants, people of a different color, "liberals") and blame them for their challenges. I am here to tell you that they are not the sources of your problems. The sources of your problems are more likely silent, invisible forces that you can't see, because they do not live next to you. But if you pay attention to the clues like a scientist/social scientist does, you can piece together the evidence and find out what's really going on.

Go now, and be smart about this.

PS: Global warming is caused in large part by human activity. And evolution isn't just a silly scientific religious belief. Oh, I have so much more to tell you.

Re: the struggles of the middle class and having them blame each other, I'm reminded of the old quote from Gilded Age financier, Jay Gould: "I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half."

I have two boys who play competitve sports and are extremely competitive (which I foster). They shoot their red ryder in the backyard doing target practice. They skateboard, snowboard, and this summer both did archery camp for 2 weeks. My oldest is interested in doing ROTC in HS. They also have chores that they have to do daily and both are extremely bright, having earned a spot in the Gifted and Talented program and blew their SOLs out of the water.

I'm not in the slightest bit worried about their future. I do see what the article is saying then and I do see many mothers emasculating their husbands and male children. Only will be good for my Alphas when they manage all those betas.

What is your definition of masculinity?

My husband chose to be emasculated. He chose to be one of the children. He decided to go entrepreneur and then when it didn't work, sat on his ass and whined the world wasn't fairer. Never got started with anything else.

He had all sorts of opportunity to be an equal partner. He just found it easier not to. It was easier to watch me bust my ass (I make a decent living). This was not a mutual agreement.

I think there's responsibility for this state of affairs in all sorts of places, and some rests with men themselves.
