Man Down: The Attack on American Masculinity

Manly men of the past didn't whine about their lot in life.

Men only earn about 130% of what women earn--an abomination!

They only have the overwhelming majority of seats in the congress, senate, and supreme court: They should have them all!

They're more likely to get hired and promoted and given raises than women based on their XY chromosomes alone -- with all this stuff just "handed" to them, they're going soft.

They only represent a big majority of speaking characters in movies and even kids' films -- it would be more, but we haven't made progress on this point for several decades. The horror.

Did you post from 1980

My DH fishes, rides his motorcycle cross country a few times a year, goes to the gym and works out - lifting weights - every day. Oh, and he was a stay at home dad for three years because I earned more. He cooks, he cleans, and his masculinity has survived! I do not worry about my sons' masculinity. Or earning potential. I hope they are just like their dad.

+1

2 sons here. DH is a former marine and what a lot of people think of as a man's man. And he takes care of his share of household chores and the kids over summer vacation. Maybe if more men stepped up and owned responsibility inside the home, the "bumbling man" joke would die out.

I do agree that our educational system isn't doing boys any favors .. but it's also not doing girls any favors either. Girls who are failing tend to fail quietly and just get passed along. It's the boys who are failing loudly that draw attention. Among other things, this is why everyone thought dyslexia was several times more prevalent among boys until the NIH sponsored studies in the late 20th proved otherwise.

This is why so many men gravitate towards marrying latinas so they enjoy a modicum of respect of the household.

I agree with the article. It's one thing to want equality at work and fair pay. I'm all for that and honestly don't understand, as a man, why women are paid and treated unfairly in the workplace. Feminist and leftists, they pretty much want to redefine masculinity. They effectively don't want there to be a difference between women and men. Problem is, there is a difference. The difference go from our physical features and core strength all the way down to the way chemicals are processed in our brains and bodies. That doesn't mean one is superior over the other. But we should respect those difference. I feel folks get caught up in the terms " man"and "masculine." One is not a perquisite for the other. A SAHD is not a masculine act, but he's definitely a man, and his manhood is not less than say a navy seal. Just displayed differently.

Those men you speak of are older ones that still reaped the benefits of a power structure totally int heir favor. . Our children is a totally different story and boys are getting the real short end of the stick. You can agree that the power structure used to heavily favor men and also agree there is a growing crisis with boyhood today.

As the mother of a son, the only thing I can say IF that is true is great...level the playing field then.

Elevating one gender does not have to come at the expense of tearing another one down. That is sad you want to make your son feel less to have another gender feel more. We can empower both genders.

In politically correct world, the white male is the last one who can be openly mocked. And so he is- we are bombarded with media images of the bumbling, dumb white male who thinks his minivan is a "swagger wagon."

Diminish him and he'll soon meet those diminished expectations which is a scary thought since he's actually been contributing quite bit historically.

Men and women in the middle class are big-time economic losers--in this situation it's not a woman-taking-it-from-the-man thing, it's billionaires taking it from everyone else. If you don't see that, you've fallen prey to smoke and mirrors deception. God help you and whoever it is that is you think you're "head of the family" to.

Preach!!!

Half the ads on television mock the white male.

And yet the majority of writers, directors, and producers for TV and movies are..............white men. They're the ones creating, packaging, and selling this vision.

Well I am not sure about the ethnic and gender identities of these writers but the point is they know full well that only white males can be mocked and that's what they do.

Sounds like Taliban drivel. In societies where men and women are more equal, "everyone" benefits. Men, women, children. Children especially.

This article reduces a man's role to income earner and a woman's role to nurturer. You are doing a disservice to everyone if you limit the concepts of masculinity and femininity to those unbelievably narrow stereotypes.

This is true but consider also that matriarchy does not work well in terms of social outcomes- which means the white male should not be turned into a swagger wagon driver.
