Why did you even clicked this thread if you have a son? Do you like moss, wood chips and pebbles inside your underwear? What about sand? Yeah I didn't think so. |
For me its not about modesty at all. Heck, my daughters (2 and 4) are the ones at the beach with only their bottoms on. And just yesterday my youngest daughter got her shirt dirty at the park and we just changed her shirt out in the open without a thought. Ooh, scandalous! But if they are wearing dresses at the park they always wear shorts or leggings under. They hate getting rocks, sand, mulch, etc. in their undies which is totally understandable I think. And also, my oldest daughter claims that going down the slide hurts the backs of her legs if she is just wearing underwear under a dress. I never thought about that, but with the friction I guess it makes sense. |
| I found some super short shorts at Old Navy that my 3 yo wears under dresses. I think they were called layering shorts or something like that. They were $5 each when I bought mine a couple of months ago. |
I can believe it, because that's what I did with two daughters. They are now 8 and 12, and it doesn't seem to have caused them any harm. |
| For me, it is partially about modesty. I don't think showing underwear is appropriate at any age. Neither is keeping girls who prefer wearing dresses sidelined from being active. So, bike shorts it is. |
| My daughter wears bike shorts--you can find them at Old Navy, Target, Carter's, Children's Place, Gymboree. I just think it's more comfortable for her--no getting dirt in your underwear, and better for going down the slides. I wear Jockey Skimmies under my skirts and dresses to avoid flashing people at the playground, too. |
| I get the bike shorts from Old Navy. They were cheap and I thought they would have fallen apart after a few washes but they've been passed on from my 3-year old to my 1.5 year-old with no holes or tears. |
| our preschool suggests/encourages leggings or shorts under dresses - for modesty and comfort - i tell me DD (age 6) that she has to wear something under her dress if she'd like to hang upside down at the park. if she doesn't want to play hard, i'm fine with whatever. |
| We wear the shorts that come with pajamas. |
| As a mom of toddler boys only I always wondered why it seemed like dresses were the only or majority option in kids stores! It seems so silly to play in a dress if you are a physical kid. But even just giving a cursory glance it seems like most girls departments don't have a lot of shorts in the summer compared to dresses. |
| I have not noticed a lack of shorts but if it exists it may just be because kids/moms like dresses better so they sell better. Girls tend to keep that toddler belly for much longer which makes pants/shorts uncomfortable or difficult to fit right. So flowy dresses often work better. |
| My 2.5yo has lots of "play" dresses. They are simple, cotton, easy to throw on and take off, and they keep her comfortable and cool. She wears bloomers underneath (we call them "fancy pants"). I have noticed that it also makes it easier for me re potty-training. If she wets herself (I put plastic plants with elasticized legs over her underpants, and then the "fancy pants") we only have to change the underwear set-up. We don't have to change a whole pair of pants. She can keep the dress on, as it does not tend to get wet (with all the protective layers I've put on her!). |
Because there's nothing more comfortable in the summer than a loose summer dress. Of course, it's considerably less comfortable if you have to wear shorts under it. |
Yeah, that's what I meant- if they sell shorts anyway for under dresses, why not just sell more shorts and tops as options. I was a total, total rough and tumble girl growing up so you couldn't get me into a dress until seriously maybe middle school or later except for weddings or other big occasions. But I also bet the selection in the 80s were less overwhelming for parents, not like there were as many outlets for shopping and kids clothes makers, etc. If the next one (pregnant now) is a girl I forsee the poor thing wearing a lot of boys clothes in the first 2 years because we have so many! |
Well, when I was growing up, it was a camisole and underskirt with tights, sweater tights or shorts under a dress, so although I loved dresses, I frequently opted for lightweight pants. There's nothing like sweating to death because that was the proper way to wear a dress to convince me that I wanted nothing to do with it during the summer. Winter, I went back to my dresses happily. My girls may choose to wear an underskirt or tights while dressing up, and dressing down is either tights or shorts. We don't go back and change before going to play, and underwear always slides, so underskirts without something else wouldn't be an option when dressing casually. Sweater tights are only an option in the winter, and only if it's cold enough for snow pants but there's no snow. One girl prefers pants, one likes skirts every day, the others go back and forth. Oh, and the skirts that come with built-in shorts are a pain, the shorts are always way too loose to be useful, so we take them out. |
