What do little girls wear under dresses?

It seems so silly to play in a dress if you are a physical kid. But even just giving a cursory glance it seems like most girls departments don't have a lot of shorts in the summer compared to dresses.

Because there's nothing more comfortable in the summer than a loose summer dress. Of course, it's considerably less comfortable if you have to wear shorts under it.

Yeah, that's what I meant- if they sell shorts anyway for under dresses, why not just sell more shorts and tops as options. I was a total, total rough and tumble girl growing up so you couldn't get me into a dress until seriously maybe middle school or later except for weddings or other big occasions. But I also bet the selection in the 80s were less overwhelming for parents, not like there were as many outlets for shopping and kids clothes makers, etc.

If the next one (pregnant now) is a girl I forsee the poor thing wearing a lot of boys clothes in the first 2 years because we have so many!

You can find plenty of clothes for little girls that aren't skirts or dresses. Sometimes I have issues finding skirts for the one who refuses to wear anything else!

Really? Both of my daughters only wanted to wear skorts, when they were in the 6-10 age range.

This is me - combination of modesty and practicality. For church or nice events, DD only wears underwear. On a daily basis when she's likely to be sliding down slides, sitting criss-cross or otherwise acting like a little kid she wears bike shorts or leggings under her dresses. Target has them for cheap, so I usually grab 2 or 3 each in white and black each year. During HA's sales, I get ones that match her HA dresses. I don't get to Old Navy often, but their's work just fine as well.

modesty is not a concern for me, but as a PP pointed out there is a hygiene concern. My daughter loves to play in the dirt and sand as well. Since I would find that irritating I am assuming she would as well. I also prefer the longer leggings since they provide a little more knee coverage so we have more torn cloths but less severe and fewer scrapes (plus it allows me to be lazier with sunscreen).

Didn't see this mentioned in a quick scan, but "boyshorts"-style underwear can also fit this bill. As long as they're not too big, they function pretty well as short-shorts IMO.

I get my DD's at H&M, where the smallest size is "1.5-2 Years" (but fits larger)-- $11.95 for a 3-pack, I think? My DD is 27 months and 10th percentile, so I do shrink them in hot water. Since they do run large, that size would probably fit an average 2-2.5-year-old pretty well, otherwise, go to the next size, etc.

Our preschool told us it was a must to wear shirts or bike shorts under dresses. Dd just finished kinder and she still wears them.

At schools young kids are sitting criss cross quite often.
At the playground she is almost always upside down.

I would have looked for a different preschool. That is not a criticism; it is a statement of fact.

Yep, there is always one!

More than one, because mine did that too.

I love to sew. So, my DD always had matching bloomers when she was younger.

Cartwheel shorts at children's place. I just bought 6 for less than $2 each. If a boy wore a dress, he would want to have these on too when playing on the playground.

Totally agree. Scooter skirts with the built-in shorts are the best. DD loves them.

I buy bike shorts in bunches when I find them on sale at various places so they have around 10 each. The sales at Gymboree are usually good and convenient for me, since I make a trip there maybe twice a year.

There's also MonkeyBarBuddies which as super durable and come in many designs and lengths--both my 8yo and 4yo girls love them. They're pricier, though. Below I provide the sale link.

It seems like Gymboree has ruined their bike shorts this year by shortening them. Gymboree's whole line has really gone south in the last year.
