Lots of antisemitism in Switzerland. It never goes out of style. German influence and all....just saying. |
I am glad these students names are plastered all over the Internet. College may be a little bubble where you can play identity politics but their anti senetisn slant will make them unemployable to any company here. Why are they still in student government and not removed is such an error of judgement. |
Agreed. I've been following the issue of rising anti-Semitism in Europe since 2011 as I've researched materials for a literature course involving a book on the Holocaust experience. This UCLA incident - students' behavior and the administration's response - worries me. I think it should worry everyone. We need to take steps to address this proactively. If we don't, we know how this ends. |
There was a certain venomousness to this, it seems. |
Which has been completely ignored and swept under the rug by the university. Thinking twice about sending any kids there. |
The Chancellor called it intellectually and morally unacceptable. It's not like they started goose stepping or anything.... |
And this is fucking student government at a California university. Who the fuck cares what her views on Israel are? Not only are these students anti-Semites and anti-American, they apparently suffer from delusions of grandeur. Are they anticipating the council will be somehow involved in peace negotiations in the Middle East? GMAFB. I don't care how "contentious" the divestiture issue is/was.
OUTRAGEOUS. |
Everyone should write to the chancellor and others in positions of power stating these points of view except for the bigot who stated her support for the Jew hater actions. |
Why would you assume a Swiss student was Christian? Plenty of Swiss citizens are atheist/agnostic, and there is a sizable Muslim minority as well. I believe most Swiss citizens (like many Europeans) would be offended at the assumption that Swiss = Christian. Just as offensive as suggesting that American = Christian. |
I didn't hear anything about "Israel," although I readily admit I could have missed something. It was centered on her being Jewish which takes it into a whole new area of hate. One imagines that this grew out of the BDS debate, though. Thank goodness for the adult in the room. |
There, fixed that for you. That does make this episode a little more understandable. You know how much Europeans love Jews. |
p Who cares what the religions of the initial objectors were? Exploring a potential judicial appointee's possible conflicts is fair game. Making assumptions about such possible conflicts based on nothing more than her faith is what was so offensive here. Ultimately, she was confirmed, and apologies were issued, as well they should have. Let us hope the stereotypes se the folly of their ways. |
Well, it looks like the student govt passed a resolution condemning antisemitism. That's good. |
Why would you make assumptions of any of their religions? If it is fair for the others, it is fair for the Swiss as well. Just be consistent. |
It's about Israel. Just read the first article. They include Israel as a source of the problem. There is a disinvest in Israel movement that is making its way through the college ranks- based on the model used with South Africa. The opposition by the pro Israel groups has been vicious. Name calling etc typical right wing response. Not agruing the merits, just attacking the people proposing the program. For many of the college kids it is the first time they have faced this. It is an eye opener and they remember who said what and what organization they represented. It has really been divisive. |
