Yes, this was a very disturbing story. |
Pretty awful stuff - PC college campus behavior run amok. It's not exactly like the student council at UCLA was going to decide the fate of Jerusalem and the West Bank. |
I'm going to defend the council members here. Last year, the decision to boycott Israeli businesses was one of the most contentious issues on campus. Her allegiance to various jewish groups suggest that she would feel a certain way on the boycott. Entirely reasonable to ask whether her faith would guide her feelings on hot campus topics.
I'm just not seeing the "Jews can't be trusted!!!" stuff that you're seeing. |
The challenge is - all of the students invoved are adults. |
Still, its only okay to ask this to her if the two Muslim students on the council were asked similar questions. Want to bet if the two muslim students were asked the same question, there would be hell to pay. You cannot single out a single ethnicity/religion for discrimination. Despite having good qualifications, the sticking point she was voted off by the others because she did not think "in line" with them. Your defense does not stand. Straightforwardly, it is shocking that this was even considered okay. If they had couched that it in the terms they were concerned activism may impair her decision making ability, that is another issue all together. |
Well, yes. And it helps them feel less irrelevant. |
I just researched this and it should be horrifying to any Jewish student or parent of a Jewish student. Perhaps the Department of Education could investigate. |
I am really disappointed in the chancellor's response who did not decisively condemn this incident. Contrast this to what happened at the oklahoma fratenity who sang racist chants:
"To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves "Sooners." Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members" Vs the chancellor of UCLA: "In an interview on Thursday, Chancellor Block said he viewed this as “a teaching moment. These are students that are learning about governance. I think they all learned about what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate. The campus has come together on this.” Chancellor Block needs to be fired. |
There's a video showing the exact questioning. Ignore the right way pro israel stuff - the video was uploaded on a right conservtive website..the video is still shocking.

The Chancellor's full remarks were fine. And it appears that the adult in the room did an admirable job of bringing rational thought to the weird debacle. Truly outrageous. Hate speech? |
The video was up on a variety of outlets. It speaks for itself. And that's what is so disturbing about it. |
His full remarks were not fine. like the Oklahoma case, he should have clearly outright condemned this hate speech. As of now, those students are still in student government. At the very least they should be made to resign and step down, there is no room for bigots and hate speech. |
One doesn't have to think too hard to imagine the furious take no prisoners approach if, say, Jewish students had raised similar concerns about, say, a Muslim student seeking a similar post. As this episode demonstrates, this morally repulsive behavior hasn't come with the costs one imagines such behavior would come with if it had been directed towards another group--administrative censure, demands for resignation supported by the administration, and the like, up to and including political leaders weighing in. There is a double standard--Jewish students are being subjected to increasing antisemitism in college campuses, but few outside of Jews care. I am not Jewish. But I care deeply. |
I am really infuriated at the double standard and hypocrisy. Not jewish, but indignant. |
I'm not Jewish , and I confess that it seems like this to me, too. It's like we are heading down the rabbit hole. How can this be happening? |
