Why would you assume a Swiss student was Christian?  Plenty of Swiss citizens are atheist/agnostic, and there is a sizable Muslim minority as well.  I believe most Swiss citizens (like many Europeans) would be offended at the assumption that Swiss = Christian.  Just as offensive as suggesting that American = Christian.[/quote]

Who cares what the religions of the initial objectors were?  Exploring a potential judicial appointee's possible conflicts is fair game.  Making assumptions about such possible conflicts based on nothing more than her faith is what was so offensive here.  Ultimately, she was confirmed, and apologies were issued, as well they should have.  Let us hope the stereotypes se the folly of their ways.[/quote]
