I'm not going to change anyone's mind about misogyny in their religion, so I figure that if I was going to accept the invite, I should go along with the religious dress code requirements of the event.

She did, I think. Everything I have read indicates that non-Muslim women are not required to wear a headscarf.

She wore one in indonesia so I'm curious about that

"Arrogant American" is what they will say.

It's not alien to me, I was raised Muslim. But "culture" or "religion" don't get passes on misogyny and sexism, for those reasons. Believe me - I already know a conservative Saudi male doesn't care what I or any other woman thinks.

Sexism is cultural. A conservative Saudi male will think you are being sexist by openly looking at a woman, and he is being respectful of her by not inconveniencing her with his gaze. A conservative Muslim woman will not want to suffer your looks. Who are you to tell her that she should?

Why are you so polemical? Its possible to be a conservative woman and all in for women's right. The first lady showed a great side of America with her stately presence and choice. What is the issue exactly?

Why did you post this twice. It was asked and answered already.

Perfect example of how twisted "news" has become nowadays.

Apparently the very notion that Michelle Obama didn't wear a headscarf in Saudi Arabia (GASP!!) is big news.
Ironically if it were the other way around...if Michelle Obama DID wear a headscarf in Saudi Arabia GASP!!) that would be big news too.

No win situation in today's media because information is just pumped out 24/7 - it ain't about what's important its about what's NEW and this is something new for folks to clamor about something NEW for folks to argue and debate about something NEW for pundits and politicians to criticize and comment about and tide the public over with until the next plane crash or the next shooting or the next bombing or the next scandal or the next lawsuit or the next sound bite or the next provocative picture...etc. etc. etc.

Don't know, OP. Sounds like you're the one having a hard time reconciling it. You brought it up and all.

No, you're wrong about that. I just enjoy poking my finger in the eye of idiot conservatives.

She should have worn a burqa.

She's been that for years. Why should she class it up now?

Because wearing a headscarf would have been the classy choice?

Yeah, you're right, OP. Conservatives now have springs coming out of their ears.

Isn't it liberal media that is trumpeting this?

Respecting the norm in your host country? Yes, that would have been class.

Snarling your way through the event without one? Not so much.

No. The norm in that country is to treat women like chattel. Why should any self-respecting foreigner have to cater to that?

I believe she was visiting a mosque, which is different.

That makes sense. As a conservative, I don't much care. She followed protocol in both cases. All good.
