Moms in Bikinis

I think this is the main reason.
This is my own bikini appropriateness matrix
Resort/Vacation: fine
Neighborhood pool: older kids and you are mainly hanging out in a lounge chair: fine
Neighborhood pool where you are chasing around after little kids: not my choice, but if that is what you prefer
Splashground where you are chasing kids and barely in the water yourself: weird

I'm 40, and I don't wear a bikini at the neighborhood pool because I don't want the sun exposure, and it's that much more skin to cover with sunscreen.

This is why I wear a one-piece. I just don't want to have to worry about flashing the pool.

I always vacation in California. Every woman is in a bikini in California. Granted--they look great at all ages too. I would feel like I was wearing a Burka if I showed up in a One-piece or tankini on a Southern California beach.

I work hard. I workout 6-days per week. I have a 6-pack, olive skin and no cellulite. Yes-I have had two kids. Yes- I am in my 40s. Yes- I will wear a bikini (my husband would have it no other way--and he's the only opinion I care about). Once the skin starts sagging and the age spots come out--I'll dress accordingly.

Fwiw, I see a lot of moms in bikinis at our pool in the summer.

I wear mine only at home in our yard/pool.

I don't have any one pieces because my top and bottom are different sizes so I buy both pieces separately. I'm very top- heavy and bikini tops with underwire keep me supported and bikini bottoms stay flat and don't sneak up my deep crap as easily as a one piece.

Having said that, at this point if I had to go out in public I'd wear a one piece because I still have about 10 extra lbs from my third born and am trying to get pregnant so I didn't bother dropping the weight after my last baby (1 yr old). I think I look good, and great for 3 kids, but not Great in general so I'm keeping it at home.

If you've got the body, jam out with your clam out.

I am 47. I have a slim body and nice boobs. My body is good, not perfect. I have always and will always wear a bikini. 1). You should wear whatever the heck you want. 2) Even some heavy women look better in bikinis, it depends on your shape. 3) For me, a one piece is just not comfortable. I am always so sad to hear about women who are SO concerned about others rules that they don't do what they want. My bikinis are sexy but appropriate. Not up for showing too much booty, but that is a personal preference. Wear what you want ladies.

So no one on this thread is going to call BS on this vein in the thread over and over and over.

Its just as ridiculous and American an attitude to make certain pieces of clothing something that you are or aren't worthy of wearing.

Wear what you want, if you have cellulite or a tummy or whatever its still going to be there and noticeable in a 1 or 2 piece. If you are more comfy with your jiggly tummy in a bikini bottom than with a wet piece of lycra on it, so be it.

I think the only real line you should worry about crossing is if you are going to end up accidentally naked (falling out or whatever) and embarrased by that fact. Other than that. who cares. you don't EARN your clothes or your self esteem.

Dress to flatter your body. If that means a bikini, fine. Just be honest with yourself.

Agreed. I'm 31, love my body and look great in a bikini. But even if I didn't, I would wear whatever I wanted to on the beach or at the pool. I really don't care if other women who are 40 lbs overweight are in bikinis. Its not an environment meant for covering. If you can't handle it, don't bother showing up. There are so many other countries where women of all ages are showing skin and its not sexual.

I agree that one pieces can be icky once you use the restroom. Makes me want to just get dressed putting on a wet bathing suit.

I agree you should wear what you want, BUT I do think there are some bitchy women out there who will judge you for it. They are probably just jealous that you look better than they do!

We must not go to the same pool, because I wouldn't be seen dead in anything else. It gives me an incentive to work out and eat healthy, and even if it's a frivolous reason, I'll take it.

Seriously, wear what makes you happy. You only have one life.
On beaches in France, my home country, many women go topless. Grandmothers, young girls, anyone. I feel Europeans have a much healthier attitude towards nudity than Americans, who sexualize everything.

I have a friend in France who says that's a dying trend. She said it's not common at all to see a younger woman going topless.

But I've noticed that I am the only Mom in the kiddie pools and water parks who seems to have this preference, and I've started to feel self conscious about it. Do other moms think I look out of place? Is there some kind of Mom dress code that I am missing?

I'm 49 have always worn bikinis. I work hard to stay fit, so might as well show it off. I am very realistic so the minute I think I no longer look good, I'll move to a one piece.

Sorry, but at 49 you no longer look good in a bikini - no matter how fit you are.

I'm 39, and just getting to the point that I need to stop. I have a flat stomach, but a tiny bit of sagging skin by m belly button.
I've always assumed that the skinny moms who don't wear bikinis do it because their stomachs look like they've been mauled by a tiger.
If you can wear a bikini and look good, go for it.
