Neighbors leave their trash bins on the sidewalk all week

Anonymous
This is why I love my HOA. In my neighborhood, that wouldn't happen.

Oh, my god. As we already went over again above, the OP said (in the very first post) that she'd already done this twice, and they were almost immediately pushed back out.

Recently, new renters moved into two of the units beside ours and both have a habit of leaving their trash bins on the sidewalk all week long. They rolled them out for trash pickup 3+ weeks ago, and they have remained out on the public sidewalk ever since. Because it obstructs our ability to walk on the sidewalk, I've pushed the trash cans back onto their patios a couple of times only to find that they move them back onto the sidewalk immediately.

Is there anyone within Arlington County that governs this sort of thing or do I personally have to go over there and ask them to move their trash cans back in? I seem to remember you are only allowed to leave your trash cans out for the 24 hours around your pickup day, but I can't find it on the website anymore, and now I have no idea who to call.

seriously, does no one read a post before responding???

OP- IDK if the same restrictions are still in place but when I first moved to Arlington in the 90s, we left our trash cans out one extra day. My spouse was on a business trip and i. had just had a baby and never even looked outside and forgot to bring them back in.

We promptly received a letter from someone n ArlCo reminding us that we only had 24 hours to move the cans back.

My guess is the renters are thinking - hey we don't want our stinky trash can on our patio, so we will leave it out here. Maybe they don't use that particular sidewalk.

Is it actually blocking the sidewalk? If so, I'd leave a note to kindly ask them to move it. You can share with them the link to the counties website that says they need to remove their cans from the curb within 24 hours (link below):

Print the above link out. Highlight the bit about bringing them back within 24 hours of collection. and tape it to the bins and roll them back tot he patio once more.

Either get over it and live life or take them up to the porch yourself, it only takes probably 2 minutes and you might meet your new neighbors.

See your worried they might get a fine or they might get a letter or they might be offended.

You want to some the problem. Call 311

Make a complaint that they are blocking the public’s right of way on the sidewalks.

They will send a code inspector and if needed they will fine them. Done. Problem solved. Once they get that fine it turns things around.

Car blocking the sidewalk? Hello police department.
When the officer knocks on the door they won’t ever block the sidewalk again.

I never, never concern myself with oh my they mughtbgrt a fine. You just report as needed and let the county handle it.

Problem solved.

And for the poster saying the HOA won’t fine.
Let me tell you we’ve found people ignore the letters, claim they never got them.

So now the very first warning tells them you have x days to comply and your hearing to be fined has been scheduled for this date. Failure to attend does not matter.

Guess what we get high compliance Now.

And after x days boom. They get fined. And it goes to collections if the don’t pay. So that $30 fine might just become $300 with legal collection fees.

$ = compliance.

Did you even read OP's post? She said she has moved them off the sidewalk onto their patio, and they've moved them back onto the sidewalk.

Make them disappear

OP, they are breaking the law and you should call the police. Make sure you take pictures of the crime scene.

As a mom, my priority is that the sidewalks should be passable so the kids aren't forced to step off the sidewalk onto the street. It's a pain for me, but at least I'm always aware to check for oncoming traffic.

I haven't introduced myself to our new neighbors yet, so really didn't want our first interaction to be me complaining about their trash cans.

Wow , people like you irritate the pussyfooting me.
You complain, make make pointed yet unnecessary and irrelevant commentary about them being renters ask how you can report them to get them in trouble and then when people suggest you just do the mature grown-up thing of approaching them nicely and asking them because maybe they don't know what the rules are then all of a sudden oh I wasn't trying to get them in trouble I'm just a mom and I want to make sure the whole world a safer Goldilocks and the three bears.
In other words you want to complain make other people look bad and have no responsibility to do anything .
Pound sand.

Wow. I sure couldn't wait to meet you as a neighbor for the first time, especially with a concern.

This is exhibit A why people don't want to deal with people they don't know head-on. PP, your anger is both disproportionate and coming out of nowhere.

In DC you mist bring them in by the following day. The city issued lots of fines about this recently, and them excused everyone from paying, for some reason.
