Neighbors leave their trash bins on the sidewalk all week

Anonymous
I live in a townhouse community in Ballston, so there are a lot of renters in the neighborhood. Recently, new renters moved into two of the units beside ours and both have a habit of leaving their trash bins on the sidewalk all week long. They rolled them out for trash pickup 3+ weeks ago, and they have remained out on the public sidewalk ever since. Because it obstructs our ability to walk on the sidewalk, I've pushed the trash cans back onto their patios a couple of times only to find that they move them back onto the sidewalk immediately.

Is there anyone within Arlington County that governs this sort of thing or do I personally have to go over there and ask them to move their trash cans back in? I seem to remember you are only allowed to leave your trash cans out for the 24 hours around your pickup day, but I can't find it on the website anymore, and now I have no idea who to call.

Ask them. Lazy.

Why not be neighborly and put the cans up by their house for them? Neighbors do this kind of thing for each other all the time. I can't imagine that your first impulse is to call and report them.

This makes me glad we have a HOA. Our HOA rules stipulate that we have to bring them in by a certain time -- and we can only bring them out at a certain time.

Did you even read OP's post? She said she has moved them off the sidewalk onto their patio, and they've moved them back onto the sidewalk.

Op, do you know the owners? Could you send them a quick email along the lines of, "Hey, I'm sure you didn't know this, but your new renters are leaving their garbage cans out all week by the curb?"

Does your community have a board? Maybe they could contact the owner of the unit and let them know?

Do you have an HOA? I know in our townhouse community, I get a letter in the mail if the cans are out the day right after trash pickup. When DH worked overnights he brought the cans in in the morning when he got home.

AS PA as it sounds, I might be tempted to just tape a note to them: "Your trash cans are blocking the sidewalk."

Sorry, I missed that sentence. I think I would talk to them myself rather than reporting them.

Why not just talk to your neighbors, of if they're not around leave a friendly note? They might not be aware of the rule. Seems like the obvious first step.

surely if it's a townhouse community you have an HOA. Complain to the HOA. They are very fast to get on this stuff.
