I agree..... this nation may not have a "national language," but English IS the language of business. Immigrants will not get ahead IN THIS COUNTRY unless they learn English. Their job options will be limited. It would be kind of tough to be something like.... an executive secretary or an attorney .... if you can't speak the dominant language in our country. Same with most other jobs. I think it is great if they remain fluent in their home language, but English is necessary to be successful in the US.

This is a faux controversy, much like the foolish Duck Dynasty and numerous other conservative outrages. It caters to the lowest common denominator and makes people feel comfortable with their prejudices. Because that is what this is.

However, with a few small exceptions, you do have to take a test in English to become a naturalized US citizen. And, for the record, our Constitution was written in English.

That all said, I personally am against singing an American made song in other languages. What is the point? I don't sing other country's important/cultural/national anthem-type songs in English. It is disrespectful.

Why? American is not a language. We don't have a national language. Our country is comprised of people who speak many languages. Our diversity is one of our strengths and should be celebrated, not hidden.

You sing My Country Tis of Thee. You are singing another country's national anthem with the words rewritten. How is that any less disrespectful?
