What do we think of Athleta?

My mom who is 60 loves Athleta and it looks great on her, she is in very good shape, but is starting to get to that age where she needs to cover up more, due to varicose veins and a few bumps and older looking skin.

For me, I'm fit and have great legs and skin, so I'm not ready to shop at a store like Athleta just yet. I think it depends on what season of life you are in. I also think if you are younger, but a bit out of shape, then Athleta might be a good fit for you.

It is most definitely "mom clothes".

ITA! Athleta = dowdy "mom clothes. No thanks.

just out of curiosity, where do you ladies shop for athletic wear then?

I prefer Lululemon (though I don't love all of their items). I also like a brand called Clary Sage Organic.

I like Lucy athletic wear. They have a store in Rockville Congressional Plaza, not sure where else around here they are located. I have yoga pants from there that are at least 5 years old and still the most flattering workout gear I own.

What planet on you on? Plenty of their skirts and dresses are 3-4 inches above the knee.

No they are not. Irrespective, their styles scream suburban frump. Just awful. Nothing flattering about their clothes, but I'm sure the clothes work if you are otherwise sporting a FUPA.

I'm not sure why I'm getting worked up about this; it's like I'm the CEO of the company or something...

But anyway - here are some of the dresses I have. You may not like them, but they are not frumpy. They're very casual. I wore them all summer, taking the kids to the park or hanging around the house after work. I'm a size 6. My husband thinks these are some of my sexiest (non-going out dressed up) clothes. FWIW. And they are all above the knee - I'm 5'7.

Haha, it was this exact Bahia Border Dress that completely ruined Athleta for me and made me feel frumpy. I'm 5'9" and have a 34" inseam and this dress grazed my knee. I had such high expectations. The length was not exactly the problem, but it was pretty shapeless. I'm a 6 as well.

To each his own, but I find nothing sexy about these clothes. They are very suburban and unoriginal and just blah. Don't get me wrong, it is better than 90% of what I see out there on DC women, but that is a pretty low standard.

I think most of the women on here bashing Athleta are too...portly to fit into them. Except for the 5'9" chick, who probably needs to stop buying the tall sizes.

I'm not really into the dresses either, although I did get one that worked out well. I do like the yoga pants. Prefer Lucy though.

Or maybe too....stylish.

I mean, really? The Gap? Do you also dine at the Olive Garden for a nice meal?

I'm a sporty/casual dresser, and I do like some of their casual stuff, particularly shorts. My favorite is the slick rock shortie. I don't think they're frumpy.

I also wear some of their athletic stuff when running. But, I don't shop at any one store, because then I think you brand yourself. I don't want to look like a walking catalog for LuluLemon, or anywhere.

I prefer Title 9, but Athleta has some good stuff on sale when you can use the Gap coupons. I buy the swimsuits and workout clothes and use them for running, biking, etc. and they hold up well (washed delicate cycle, line dry, like everything spandex).
I like the catalog, but I always tell my husband it's not that I want the clothes so much -- I want the life (and in-awesome-shape-body) shown in the catalog.

I'm 31, 5'8" and a size 4. Athleta for work out clothes, like you're seriously working out, is fine. Athleta for casual wear looks frumpy to me and is really just a step up from wearing yoga pants and a tshirt. It seems to be moms that want to wear something that they can run after their kids in and be supported, but they think because it's a dress or because its colorful, that they look like they've tried.

It's definitely not sexy - pp with those three dresses, I hate to break it to you. Everything is full coverage, thick stretchy looking material, holding you in, cross in the back stuff that looks athletic rather than stylish. The colors and patterns are dowdy and say late 30s to 40s mom to me.

Want to be comfortable and stylish and still able to run after your kids? The slim moms in well-fitting skinny or straight jeans, ballet flats or ankle boots, a tshirt and a scarf or fitted moto jacket have the same effect and for much cheaper than a bright patterned stretchy dress with a built-in bra.

But can you explain to us how you run after your kids with a stick up your ass?

Hey, the question up for debate was is Athleta "in" or "out"? Others have asserted that it's stylish and sexy. I disagree and I posted why. What did you want to post?

Look PP - My question was "want to be comfortable AND stylish?" Then don't wear Athleta. Want to just be comfortable and still look kind of mom cute? Then wear Athleta. I'm not judging you, I'm just saying that you can't really say Athleta is "in" and "stylish" or "sexy."
