But Serena isn't everyone's cup of tea, she's a great player no doubt but can be kind of a snot IMO, while Venus has always been a class act. I rather wanted Azarenka to pull off the upset.

She is self-assured, confident, and assertive. She doesn't bow. It is deemed uncomingly in a woman.

You should go back and read some of her interviews. She's all sweet and nice when she wins but a sore loser and famously is reluctant to give credit to her opponents when she loses. Whenever she has an outburst on court or off and is asked about it later its always , "oh I can't remember" instead of owning up to it. I admire women who are self-assured, confident an assertive, not so much when they're rude and have a large ego.

I love the Williams sisters, was playing high school tennis when they were coming up in the ranks, although I will admit though that some of the things Serena says make me cringe! But I think she has certain players who seh beleives are "worthy" opponents, and those who are not. I think she actually finds Azarenka to be a worthy opponent, Kim Clijsters was another one. Justine Henin or anyone ranked outside the top 10, not so much.

We did also notice the moms odd response to the elation she should have felt (or at least put on a front for) over her daughter jubilant win and huge prize money. The way she stood there with a sour puss on her face and arms crossed did not look very good on camera. Not sure whats going on but obviously something hit a nerve with the mama hen.

Congrats to Serena, it was an incredible match!

Wierd fixaiton on this. Does Oracene smile a lot to begin with? And maybe she didn't know she was about to be on camera.

While that is true for the most part, Williams does have a lot of respect for Azarenka and is very complimentary of her play. Right now, Azarenka is the only one who can consistently give Williams a battle. The difference between #1 and #2 is far smaller than the distance between #2 and the rest of the field. Even Sharapova is a distant 3rd and really not much competition for either Azarenka or Williams. Li is the real world #3 and still has a pretty bad record against the top 2 (while she has a 4-6 record against Azarenka, Azarenka has won the last 5 meetings from 2011 on).

But did you notice any other faces she made throughout the match. She had many different expressions. Perhaps she grimaced because she thought it was in bad taste that the announcer told the entire viewing audience that Serena was walking away with a 3.6 million dollar check. I noticed the the announcer only said that Azarenka was taking home an extra $250,000, but never announced the total. I found that odd, but thought little of it until this DCUM thread.

Its not weird at all. The camera zoomed right in on her and you were so expecting to see her cheering with joy but she had her arms crossed (which alone sends a message) and a really disgusted look on her face. We (all 7 of us watching) kind of looked at each other and said "What's HER problem"? Everyone noticed...it was a very strange reaction to have seeing your daughter just take the prize and a boatload of money too! And yes she does crack a smile now and then

They always announce the winnings. Nothing new. Not a big deal...why shouldn't they announce it Is it a secret? NO

See, I watch these matches often. I disagree, they do not always announce the total winnings. And no it is not a secret that the winner of the U.S. Open takes home 2.6 mil and the finalist 1.3, but the announcer is not so crass as to say and "today you are taking home a check for 3.6 million dollars". And again, Azarenka's take home was not announced as 1.5 million. It was simply stated that she had earned an additional 250k. As it should have been announced. But hey, just like many of you can be looking and seeing too much into Serena's mom's expression, I too could be seeing and reading too much into the announcer's crass proclamation about the money.

At a U.S. Open, you would root for a foreigner over an American USA citizen. I bet all the people in Belarus were cheering for Azarenka, and never considered cheering for the gal from the other country. Only in the USA.
Oh FFS, in the United States we root for underdogs -- just like Azarenka in that match. It's an American thing. The US Open is a tournament for individuals. Stop accusing people of being tennis traitors.

I don't care for Serena Williams as a person but I respect her as an athlete and a tennis player. She's amazing!

THIS.

I was rooting for Serena b/c she's an amazing player & i wanted to see an American win the US Open title. That said, I find her very hard to like because she is a terrible sport & poor loser. She is not a good role model in that regard. Any graciousness she shows is fake. URGH. I wish I liked her. Or, I wish she were more likable!

Agree. Can't stand Serena. Horrible loser and never takes responsibility for her on court bad behavior (towards opponents and umpires.). Was rooting for azarenka. Mary carillo was the strange one on this occasion. It was incredibly crass of her to mention the full $$$$ and reference who would pay for dinner.

Agree, and I usually like Mary Carillo! But I found that inappropriate.

The funny thing is, regarding on-court behavior, Azarenka has thrown some pretty spectacular tantrums, primarily in her younger days. Thankfully she seems to have become much more even-keeled with age.

Mary Carillo seems to resent everyone. She's annoying as hell. I think they only keep her because McEnroe, who is a remarkably good commentator, is an old pal of hers.

I find her FAR less annoying than Chris Evert and Pam Shriver.

I want to wrestle Serena naked and either f her into the ground or have her do it to me, depending who wins. What an unusual body that in a strange way I want to screw. Don't really notice her hair or her mother.
