| Mary Carillo seems to hate the Williams sisters and never misses an opportunity to denigrate them. |

I think most announcers hate them. Drives me crazy. I feel like there is some racism going on there...they seem to hate it that these girls who didn't go through the snooty tennis system do so well.

Really? I thought at this US Open particularly that they were pretty complimentary towards the Williams sisters. They were like actively rooting for Venus in the match she lost.
But Serena isn't everyone's cup of tea, she's a great player no doubt but can be kind of a snot IMO, while Venus has always been a class act. I rather wanted Azarenka to pull off the upset. |
At a U.S. Open, you would root for a foreigner over an American USA citizen. I bet all the people in Belarus were cheering for Azarenka, and never considered cheering for the gal from the other country. Only in the USA. |
She is self-assured, confident, and assertive. She doesn't bow. It is deemed uncomingly in a woman. |
| I agree OP. My DH and I noticed the same things. It was strange. |
She's not a youngster. Serena is in her 30s. |

[quote=Anonymous]Maybe Oracene was offended by the "guess who's buying dinner" comment. In the Venus and Serena documentary, Serena made the comment that she "was going to go broke taking care of her family". That was her follow-up comment after she approved an airline ticket for her father's fourth wife to fly home to Florida (from NY) to pick up Richard's medicine that he forgot.
At any rate... the suggestion that Serena needs to "buy dinner" for the family could rub the mom the wrong way even if said in jest. I'm sure Mary Carillo didn't mean anything snide by that but $3.6 million is one heck of a purse. Go Serena. $50+ million in prize money is amazing. Aha! That would totally explain things...she hit a nerve! |
REALLY? Did you see the sold out stadium? Jam packed, and I knew two people who had small parties at their homes to watch it....where have YOU been? |
I am an American and a proud one but in heartbeat wanted Azrenka to win. I know many who were rooting for her. Serena has an attitude so has lost me as a fan, but Venus on the other hand is a class act. With regard to OP's observation her expression did not go unnoticed. Many were talking about it, Carillo doesn't care for them, it was a dig whether or not she meant it this way and there was been tension on the fiances front between Serena and her mother and "taking care" of the family...so think Mom is ultra sensitive to it. Signed a proud American engaged to a wonderful man who is half African American (so don't even go there) |
You should go back and read some of her interviews. She's all sweet and nice when she wins but a sore loser and famously is reluctant to give credit to her opponents when she loses. Whenever she has an outburst on court or off and is asked about it later its always , "oh I can't remember" instead of owning up to it. I admire women who are self-assured, confident an assertive, not so much when they're rude and have a large ego. |
Who cares? Geesh, tennis is a multi-national sport. Who says I'm American anyway, and why should i be restricted to rooting for someone from my own country? My fav female tennis player is actually Radwanska because of her variety and playing style. |
Lots of empty seats in stadium, was wondering if they were corporate or something. Seemed late this year, conflicted with start of football. And the men's final is today at 5pm? WTF is up with that? |

I enjoy tennis and play. We have taken a trip to NY a few times to watch the matches. I have to say I am a fan of The Williams sisters, more Venus than Serena, who strikes me as a sore loser..seeing her antics on court proves this.
We did also notice the moms odd response to the elation she should have felt (or at least put on a front for) over her daughter jubilant win and huge prize money. The way she stood there with a sour puss on her face and arms crossed did not look very good on camera. Not sure whats going on but obviously something hit a nerve with the mama hen. Congrats to Serena, it was an incredible match! |
| Its hard to call Serena a sore loser, given that she hardly ever loses lately. |
