OK we are big big tennis fans. So we have followed many of the American players for years including the unstoppable Williams sisters. So....we were loving that bitter match yesterday for the finals. What threw us were two things, on a minor note the horrible purple braids that Venus was sporting? Huh? Did she want to make sure we didn't' forget about her? I bet the guys up in space for NASA noticed her too
But what really threw us and a few noticed this is when Serena was getting her award and her ALMOST FOUR MILLION DOLLAR CHECK!!!!!! and they joked "well we guess we know who's buying dinner tonight"...they zeroed in on her mother who had this really nasty looking smirk on her face with her arms closed. WTF? What was THAT? Anyone else take note? Kudos to Serena for a gallant battle royale but seriously tell your mom to act a little more excited and gracious when her daughter is accepting almost 4 million dollars for a few hours of grunting and playing what she loves most. |

So you're big tennis fans, but what you're commenting on is:
1. Venus Williams's hair 2. Venus and Serena Williams's mother's face in a TV reaction shot. OK, got it. |
| We noticed the same thing about Serena's mother, we also thought her reaction was very strange, instead of jumping up in excitement for her daughter she acted peeved. Maybe there is tension there? |
Agree. BTW, I was at the tennis open last week. It was great. |
| Yes even one of the local channels mentioned her mom this morning and her reaction, it did not go unnoticed OP. |
|
And, really, just WHY should we care about either of your observations?
Agree that the Williams sisters are legends in their own time. |
Actually I DID notice that too and thought it was an odd reaction given that her 20 something year old daughter just won her umpteenth grand slam and prize money at nearly 4 million. The camera obviously thought it was worth showing too. And for the record, I am a fan of The very talented Williams sisters (not so much their fashion sense hehe) |

Maybe Oracene was offended by the "guess who's buying dinner" comment. In the Venus and Serena documentary, Serena made the comment that she "was going to go broke taking care of her family". That was her follow-up comment after she approved an airline ticket for her father's fourth wife to fly home to Florida (from NY) to pick up Richard's medicine that he forgot.
At any rate... the suggestion that Serena needs to "buy dinner" for the family could rub the mom the wrong way even if said in jest. I'm sure Mary Carillo didn't mean anything snide by that but $3.6 million is one heck of a purse. Go Serena. $50+ million in prize money is amazing. |
|
Weird. I noticed Serena's unhittable groundstrokes in the third set.
Oh, because I actually care about tennis, not gossip. |
|
Had no clue his was going on and i am a big sports fan. tennis has been dying a slow death for years and
can't say i know 1 person who was watching or mentioned it. |
8:25 here. Agreed. I forgot to add that I didn't see the mother's reaction. Azarenka's win in that 2nd set had me on the edge of my seat. That was a great match. |
| That was such a good match, one of the best I've seen in a long time! Vika's comeback in the second set was incredible, I was a bit sad for her that she couldn't pull out the win. |
|
Great match despite the wind, especially that second set.
And stop picking on people's appearances - really is just juvenile. |
I noticed the awful hair color as well. However, I noticed the match more. It was an awsome match. Go Serena. She is one short of Everett and Martina for the most grand slams. I think she has two more in her before she surpass them. That was a great comeback on Serena's part. Azenaka (sic) will be a force to be reckoned with in her own time. I think in a year or two, Azenaka will be the person to beat. Great match. OP if you were such a fan of tennis and the Williams' sister, how is it that you only noticed things you perceive as negative. Interesting. I did not notice that particular expression you mentioned on Oracene's face. However, if you really watched the match, you would have noticed many expressions throughout on the woman's face. There were expressions of delight, dismay, joy, etc. At one point, she even displayed an expression of awe toward Azenaka (sic) in the way she battled back in the second set. But alas, OP you only noticed what you wanted to notice, negative. |
She will in her time. Other than Serena, I don't think there is anyone else out there who can best her. It is still Serena's time. |
