Exactly. The negative posters on this thread need to get out a little bit more. The sport is exploding in popularity because it is being made availabe to all economic strata, both in inner cities and country high schools. And the notion that only rich white kids play is ridiculous, go or watch a game on TV and you'll see. Lacrosse teams (youth rec, high school, and club) emphasize character, integrity, and high academic achievment. And that's not lip service, the coaches will yank a player for failure to demonstrate good behavior on or off the field. The unfortunate actions of a few in recent years has tainted the overall perception of lacrosse players, but the players and coaches today are working hard to dispell the myth. |
That was not the question, start your own thread on that if you wish this was about lax players and perceptions! |
They have the highest graduation rate of any other cohort in college. |
Yeah, rich white kids with no respect for women who grew up privileged enough to know they have to graduate from college to be as rich as daddy to breed their own lax players. |
yup this is my perception. Growing up the only kids I knew who played lacrosse went to expensive private schools. |
Exactly. This was the world according to you, and you are entitled to your perception. But this is not the reality of lacrosse today. Only a very few make it into an "elitist" college, and if you truly want to play lacrosse there and graduate, there is very little "cohorting". |
This may be true in Upstate NY but not in the MD/VA/DC area. I've seen plenty of examples of poor character and behavior. Lacrosse players are not known for being the top academics in the class. Never once have I seen HS coaches yank kids for poor behavior off the field. It is usually admin that has to do it. Yes there are a few examples of lacroose kids who are good students but in many cases it is the lacrosse part that gets these kids into princeton, harvard, cornell, duke etc. If they did not get recruited, they never would get in to these schools. |
EVERY sport has their share of jerks. I find that its no more prevalent with lacrosse than it is with football, basketball, soccer or any other sport. A few high profile media crazy incidents allows people to start stereotyping. Please do not let the media brainwash you. Tons of great kids play lacrosse. End of story. |
Pretty much. Plus, murderers. (UVA) |
That hasn't been my experience. When I coached lacrosse, most of the parents were highly educated, several were doctors, dentists, and lawyers. Their kids were also straight A students and could have gotten into schools are their own without lacrosse. |
Sorry for the typos. Was using my phone. |
Rich, cocky, white with no respect for people. I immediately think of the UVA case. |
SERIOUSLY? Do you live in a vacuum? You are attributing ONE case as a prejudice against the entire sport. Can't wait to see other posters on this thread chime in about athletes in other sports where crimes, even murder, were committed. |
Sad that there are so many close minded people. My sons all play lacrosse and I can say that nearly all of their friends and teammates are truly exceptional young men. All smart, athletic and do good things for our community. To lump every lacrosse player in with two or three unfortunate events is just ridiculous. That is like saying every baseball player takes steroids because A rod did or every golfer cheats because Tiger did or every football player has a violent streak because Aaron Hernandez was convicted. COME ON. I presume you all to be educated.....get real.
Lacrosse is THE fastest growing sport in all socioeconomic groups. Please educate yourself before you spew hatred. |
Lacrosse player + private school = Success |
