What is the perception of a lacrosse player?

Totally. I went to a small private liberal arts college in new england. all the lax guys were hot. by definition (given the school) they were also almost 100% rich white kids. It is what it is. If your son is good at it and loves it, who cares what the perception is.

Etc.

yeah, its those rich and white lacrosse players who are the problem...

Well said! Thank you.

Racist.

How is it racist to point out all the non white non lacrosse players who have been in trouble with the law and have horrible reputations? Please explain your logic, if you have any beyond a knee jerk white guilt liberal reaction.

Should be kept outside to smash rocks and dig ditches all day?

Or another hook....

Who takes AP classes when they have already been accepted to a college sophomore year?

Maybe someone who actually wants to learn?

I think you can find fault and find it hard to resist stereotyping virtually any sport....football being unintelligent meatheads, basketball platers being inner city super athletes, I could go on.

Having had two sons who both played lacrosse at the college level I can say that the majority of their friends were superb young men, very intelligent, great athletes, kind, giving, compassionate, very self directed and now all working and successful. Some of their teammates came from wealth and privilege but not all by any means. It is not fair to lump them....is it predominantly white? Yes I believe that to be the case but also feel it is changing and changing fast. My older son is working in the financial industry in California and works for non profit organization teaching inner city kids the game and he marvels at how many are taking to it, and has watched some go on become high school superstars who are of course going to be great college stars.

This is just the beginning so as much as you think you know what the stereotype is, it is changing right before our very eyes.

I'm one that has a very negative perception of LAX players, but I agree with PP that who plays the sport is changing rapidly. The question is: where will the rich, white privileged kids go when they're overtaken by better athletes? Polo?

Can you please in a mature way (leaving sensationalized media stories having to do with lacrosse players out of your supporting argument) tell us what your "perception" is and why? Just really curious..thanks!

PP here. My current perception, as others have said, is rich, privileged white boys who often attend prep schools they couldn't get into academically. My freshman son's only pals who are going to private school are lacrosse players. My favorite story from one of them is how after a teammate broke his arm in a collision with an opposing player, the coach of our local team told my son's friend to punch the opposing player in the mouth. He did and the kid lost 2 teeth. Charming.

And lest we forget, before George Huguely there was always Duke LAX and the prostitute.

But really is that fair? Do I need to cite the MANY MANY cases involving football, baseball and basketball scandals? Why do you "pick" on lacrosse? I will answer it for you...because precisely of what you said its made up "mostly of white rich privileged kids" and I think THAT is what gets you hot under your collar. Forget that the vast majority of them are very athletic do extremely well in school (do your research as to which sport outperforms the rest in the classroom....you guessed it lacrosse)!

So if you are going to scoop down reciting the case of a local lacrosse coach and his immature and mean spirited antics (EVERY community has dozens of those for ALL sports.......don't even get me started) or the one or two cases that became big media deals because again of who they targeted then this is a futile battle.

But if you want to go toe to toe and tell me a sport that has less incidences than lacrosse....I will be more than happy to be your sparring partner and prove you wrong. VERY wrong.

ALL sports have their fair share of bad boys who do bad things. So happens the media decided to latch onto the rich white boys sport of choice during some tragic events. But lets not forget that there have been all kinds of scandals from murders to adultery with baseball, football, racecar driving..you name it. To single out lacrosse is just plain old ignorance.

Guilty. But I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Who's not more impressed by grit than what Daddy's money can buy? Maybe if the sport hadn't been invented by Native Americans.... I'll just be happier when it's a little more diverse both ethnically and economically. And as you noted, this is happening.

I really don't need to go toe to toe with you as my kids don't play this sport. OP asked how LAX players were perceived and I answered. OP didn't ask about loutish behavior in other sports. Either way, the negative impressions about LAX-ers aren't my problem, but something the sport needs to address.

The perception is out there: Here is an example

BroMoPhobia
Somehow, according to the website MyLifeIsBro.com, misogyny and domestic abuse have become as central to the “Lax Bro” image as “the flow” and “the spoon.” While the website is (hopefully!) satirical, it’s an incubator for every negative stereotype that poisoned our sport during the baseless and devastating Duke scandal. How laxbros became gangsta seems a mystery, but in every demand on the “My Life Is Bro” board for a sandwich from a ‘slampiece,’ one envisions a nodding Richard Brodhead saying “I told you so!” One can just as readily envision a 12 year old laxrat, one not yet able to make the distinction between satire and reality, ultimately internalizing the text on the site as authentic guidelines for ‘bro’ status, just like every one of the thousands of kids who emulated “The Boz.” The anonymous postings on mylifeisbro.com are presumably fictitious, but in the Age of Image, perception is reality. For young people in the process of developing an identity while concurrently maintaining online alter egos, alter egos where anonymity and disinhibition can quell sound judgement, the screen image can supplant and redefine reality.

Lacrosse is for pretentious fat boys with arrogant parents.

I assume above means frat and not fat I think anyone who is dissing needs to educate themselves before spewing their venom. EVERY sport has its villains, lacrosse is no different.
