Nervous breakdown did it for me!

Me too!

This. I dropped the baby weight in 2 weeks. People would ask me, "how'd you do it?!", and I'd joke "Panic will take that weight right off!".

I wasn't actually joking.

Paleo, weights, running....lost most of the weight by the time the last of three hit her first birthday. Mod fat, low carb, high protein and no grains. Easy. Lots of coffee, no sugar, dark chocolate.

Nothing with added sugar, no sweets, low carb and only whole grains, no soda or juice. Little to no wine. Eat a good breakfast with protein/fat. Snack on almonds/walnuts or hummus. Small/sensible lunch and dinner. Eat nothing after dinner. Go to bed early if you are starving.

I am 5'7" about 125-130, w/a 2yo and 6mo. MY skinniest was probably 120 and my heaviest aside from pregnancy was 140. I don't currently bf and that wasn't a weight loss solution for me. I basically don't eat too much but I do love 1-2 glasses of wine every night. So for breakfast, greek yogurt or cottage cheese and coffee. Lunch is a my "big meal" of a wrap and some fruit side or a big salad and a cookie or a burrito and a side. Dinner is usually a bowl of soup or half a sandwich or basically something small-ish. I try to avoid junk during the week. Weekends are whatever goes. But I do like healthy foods generally. I rarely exercise because of time (maybe run a few miles once per week if I'm lucky).

I'm small framed and have been small my whole life, except for in college when I was like a typical "fluffy" college girl- a little pudgy from too much alcohol and crappy food. (By pudgy I mean 125 on my 5'1 frame. It doesn't sound heavy but it didn't look good.) I had my fair share of diet/restriction issues where I'd lose weight, then binge and balloon back up again. Then I got pregnant and thought, "I can eat anything I want!" And it was thrilling... for like 3 weeks. Then I realized, "It's just food. It's not THAT EXCITING."And for some reason, that just sort of occurred to me for the first time then. So I ate moderately throughout my pregnancy, gained only 20 lbs, lost it all in 2 weeks, and lost another 25 lbs on top of that, getting back to my high school weight (95 lbs). I've been that since my DC was born 3 years ago. It's just a way of thinking mostly: food isn't that great, so I don't need to go nuts and eat a ton of it, and I don't need to make it some forbidden treat either and deprive myself. I eat what I want, when I want, and stop when I'm done. It's so deceptively, infuriatingly easy... once you figure it out.

I do have thin, bad hair that I hate.

I have a question for the women who say it's genetics, and thst they eat a lot but don't gain weight. For you, what is a typical day's food? I am thinking that your definition of "a lot" is different from mine. For example, i can easily eat an entire pint of froyo or ice-cream in one sitting.

NP here who also credits genetics. I'm a little over 5'9 and have to work to stay at 115 or above (end up getting dizzy around 113). I eat a decent amount of food and happen to not eat meat, but that has nothing to do with weight. I do have a sweet tooth. Haven't been to the gym in years, but I do try to walk with the kids each day.

To the poster who asked about meals, here are some of my go-to foods:

Bfast: Coffee, Orange juice and bowl of grape nuts with fruit and honey or 2 scrambled eggs on a deli flat w slice of cheese. Plain mini wheats is also an option, but I find i get hungry pretty quickly on just that.

Lunch: veggie burger with tomato, cheese and avocado on deli flat. Or veggies (tomato, onion, cucumber, peppers) and hummus on a tortilla. Or cheese and black beans on a quesadilla. The occasional PB&J on wheat or grilled cheese. (I SAHM)

Dinner: fish with broccoli and cous cous. Or veggie ziti. Or sauteed shrimp and veggies over pasta. Or spinach and mushroom quiche (I eat about 1/3 of the pie plate, DH eats 1/2 and I have a slice for bfast the next day). Black beans over brown rice with tomatoes, avocado and tobasco/cheese/sour cream. Vegetable pizza.

Snacks: fruit and cheese, trail mix from trader joes (the one with the dried pineapple is excellent), minibagel with cream cheese, occasional kashi bar. At night, I always have dessert -- hunk of cake tonight, 4 oreos or mug of ice cream other nights.

I don't each much of what the kids eat because it just doesn't appeal to me and because I don't eat meat and they do. I found that i dropped some weight when I came off of the pill and when I gave up diet soda. Beverages now are usually sparkling water and a glass of wine/beer at night.

Sounds really healthy. That's good. I am guessing that you have good portion control. For example, I would eat 10 to 12 Oreos instead of 4. I really need to work on this.

You eat less calories than you burn. Do the math. I am sorry, but yes, I may have genetics on my side, but the majority of people who are overweight are simply eating too much and not burning off enough. I am so sick of hearing moms who I know complaining about not losing the baby weight when they do nothing to stop their bad eating habits and don't get moving. I exercise at night. Don't tell me you're too tired after working/taking care of the kids. Just go out and do it -- 4-5 times a week. Don't overthink it. Just go!

I am not skinny, but have gradually dropped a lot of weight in a sane way. My DD is 2 and I weigh 30 pounds less than I did when I got pregnant with her.

1 - tracking my food. I track everything I eat and watch for trends - I noticed that I was doing a lot of pre-dinner munching. Now, I make sure to have a healthy snack right before I leave for work and account for that in what i am eating for the day. I also noticed that the weeks i ate a large breakfast (500 calories or so) I tended to lose more weight. So I always eat a big breakfast now.
2. Exercise - started with working out 3 days a week, hell or high water. Now i work out 5 days a week (2 days of circuit or strength training, 3 days of running or other high intensity cardio. I use a heart rate monitor and make sure I am kicking my a** when I work out...no watching a move and plodding along on the elliptical.) In addition to burning calories, it makes me really respect and care about my body - and I am more likely to take care of it. The days I don't work out, I try to walk 3-4 miles.

I don't do "cheat" days. It's too easy to unwind 5 days in one "bad" day. Also, I know that I will go overboard on weekends if I am too restrictive on the weekdays. I just incorporate small amounts of treats into my week - maybe a couple days a week.

I use myfitnesspal to set goals and track my calories/nutrients. I've lost about 40 pounds in 18 months, not doing anything I can't maintain for the rest of my life.

Genetics for me too. I eat whatever I want. That said, I do not like chocolate, which probably helps but I have 1- 2 glasses of wine almost every day. I think healthy food appeals to me (fish, chicken, veggies, fruit, etc.) but I don't cut out anything like carbs and I don't do portion control. I know I'm lucky to not have to work at staying trim.
Good luck, ladies.

That is it exactly. A pint of ice cream is 4-5 servings for me. I still think I eat "a lot", but my definition may be quite different than the next person.

I am 21:15 - I have to say that "recalibrating" in terms of what I think of as normal portion sizes has been one of the most important things I have done. I used to eat really large servings of baked goods, for example, and now I just don't. Once in awhile, I used to eat a full cupcake from crumbs - not often, maybe once a month. Now, it seems insane to eat that much in one sitting. And other smaller changes - 3 slices of pizza used to be my normal, now it's 2. It just takes awhile to make it a habit, but after a few months of being diligent it kicks in.

Thanks for the tip. I really need to recalibrate!!
