Are there styles you consider off limits after 40?

Why are you reading this forum if you have such a low opinion of the people who post here regularly?

You must wear Danskos.

I have a pair of Dansko clogs and LOVE THEM and I am a young married woman. They are so comfy and I normally wear them schlepping around in the fall/ winter with jeans. I see no problem with wearing them. I also have Jimmy Choo's and Chanel handbags and wear target clothes all the way to buying at NM. Who cares!?!?!

Ah yes- I also have a Burberry quilted jacket

SO you wear Dankos and are a label Whore. Awesome.

No not a label whore at all. If you learned to read pp I buy target clothes that are no name labels and I also buy shoes from there and cheap zappos work ones. I mix it up soI can look great and invest in some classics but also shop without spending a ton. Sorry you feel the need to judge people to make yourself feel superior.

Even the most toned women have this after 40. It's natural, but I intend to hide it, no matter the temperature and RH!

What about Michelle Obama?

Well, I haven't seen her up close, but she certainly does look great in pictures. AA women tend to have much nicer-looking skin for much longer.

But I stand by my assertion that too many of my almost-cohort have arm skin that's far too loose and papery-looking to expose at close range. It doesn't seem to start right at 40, but it's there a few years after.

Sorry - on my way to 48 here - and have none of this. And i'm not even the most toned woman! And none of my same-aged friends have it, either!

I know, right?

My mom is 55 and has none of what that poster is describing. My mom also works out quite a bit and it toned. She has taken impeccable care of her skin, diet, and fitness her entire life. Genetics also play a role. My mother does not have even a speck of stretch mark or loose skin on her body.

I'm 48 and the "bad arm syndrome" is definitely true in middle age. And I say this because I go out a lot with friends in their mid 20's and trust me standing next to someone that young you see the difference. I am not in bad shape and I don't look bad, but I know I can't wear what they wear and I don't try. I look good in my own way, which is why I can still blend in w younger friends but it's not easy.

Glad you're not my kid.
Signed, a non-Dansko-wearing over-40 mom

My mom is great looking and youthful and I don't expect her to EVER wear Danskos... but at 48, the frayed denim American Eagle miniskirt is just off limits. It was an atrocious skirt on its own; combined with her age, it would have made her look foolish. I was doing her a favor. There's hot, and there's "mature woman trying to be 22"- which is so not hot.

Your mother is 48? How old are you? Do you have kids? I'm 50 and have an 11 yr old.

I'm 28. I have one child. I'm not from DC; in most parts of the country people don't have kids so late. I don't say that to be snarky, just to explain- my mom had me at 20. Where I'm from, most 50 year olds have college aged kids.

There is no shame in being older, and no reason to hide anything.
If you are wearing something (e.g. a tiny skirt) that sends a message that seems ridiculous for your age (or any age) - than that is probably unwise, but if your message is "It's hot today and I am comfortable enough in my skin to wear no sleeves even if my arms aren't perfect" I think you are fine.

Anonymous wrote:This is coming from a 32 year old, but I think almost everything can be adjusted to be age appropriate. For instance, I saw one of those ruffle skirts in the Garnett Hill catalog that a 40+ could wear. It was just above the knee, and a pewter colored cotton. The model wore it with a white tank and flat sandals, and a fun necklace. This was a couple years ago, but I want to say it was called the Barcelona skirt?

Funny, I just ordered this, and it's going back because the fabric is too flimsy, and the ends of the ruffles flip up. I think you can wear a lot of styles at 40+ but not cheap fabric or construction.

Like a PP said, stand next to a 20 year-old and take note of the difference. There's a certain papery quality that's not possible to escape.

What is papery quality? Don't get it.

Not if you were smart enough to stay out of the sun. Think Marcia Cross, Kim Basinger, etc. I'm super-pale and could never tan, and wow, am I glad for it now (at 42).
