Are there styles you consider off limits after 40?

If so, what are they?

Jeans with huge rips in the knees (or elsewhere). It looks awful on most people but especially over 40.

Short ruffle skirts
Toms shoes
Longchamp Le Pilage tote as one's purse (fine as an extra carry bag, but grow up and get a real purse)

really short skirts or dresses even if you have great legs...closer to knee length is more appropriate.

anything sleevless if your arms aren't seriously toned.

I also find that I need to be more polished to look acceptable...no more 'bed head'. I need regular trims on my hair which I used to go months without trimming.

You are seriously asking the Dankso crew this question?

This is coming from a 32 year old, but I think almost everything can be adjusted to be age appropriate. For instance, I saw one of those ruffle skirts in the Garnett Hill catalog that a 40+ could wear. It was just above the knee, and a pewter colored cotton. The model wore it with a white tank and flat sandals, and a fun necklace. This was a couple years ago, but I want to say it was called the Barcelona skirt? I think plenty of 40+ have great arms, so that sleeveless thing makes no sense. One exception I can thing of is a cut-off denim short. Those are very in style right now, in colored denim. I wouldn't wear them, even though I have great legs and an 18.5 BMI. I would just feel silly, and I would think anyone else wearing them my age would look silly. Now a colored denim short with a cuff instead of fray? Totally fine. So basically, I think with a few tweaks, anyone can look fine in anything.

Last summer, my mom tried to buy a frayed denim miniskirt. I literally had to beg her to put it down and then resort to telling her how absolutely assinine she would look in it.

Really? A 40-yo can't wear a sleeveless top? Have to disagree on that one.

Personally, I'd much rather see a 40+ woman wearing Danskos than cutoff denim, but that's just me.
