Are there styles you consider off limits after 40?

This is DC...hot humid! Rock your sleeveless shirts ladies...with or without great guns!

I haven't worn gumboots with a tiara since my twenties, but apart from that, anything goes.

Short ruffle skirts
Toms shoes
Longchamp Le Pilage tote as one's purse (fine as an extra carry bag, but grow up and get a real purse)

This is really oddly specific, like you know someone who wears all three together?

Glad you're not my kid.

Why are you reading this forum if you have such a low opinion of the people who post here regularly?

You must wear Danskos.

I have a pair of Dansko clogs and LOVE THEM and I am a young married woman. They are so comfy and I normally wear them schlepping around in the fall/ winter with jeans. I see no problem with wearing them. I also have Jimmy Choo's and Chanel handbags and wear target clothes all the way to buying at NM. Who cares!?!?!

Ah yes- I also have a Burberry quilted jacket

The 60+ year old owner of my child's preschool has worn acid washed jeggings. She has also worn Juicy sweatpants.

My 64 year old mother wore a cat suit to a Halloween party. I have no frame of reference for this question.

anything sleevless if your arms aren't seriously toned.

I also find that I need to be more polished to look acceptable...no more 'bed head'. I need regular trims on my hair which I used to go months without trimming.

Really? A 40-yo can't wear a sleeveless top? Have to disagree on that one.

If she has fat arms she can't.

But if your objection is fat arms, what difference does it make how old she is?

NP getting scarily close to 40 here. I don't think fatness or even general tone is the issue so much as dried-up middle-aged ladyskin.

Even the most toned women have this after 40. It's natural, but I intend to hide it, no matter the temperature and RH!

This is such a difficult question to answer! I think a lot depends on your body type and your personality. Is a sleeveless short romper appropriate for women over 40? Probably not....but maybe in some cases if the piece is right, and you have the skin tone, body type, and confidence to pull it off. I don't think there are any rules out there that dictate that once a woman turns 40, she has to start shopping at Chico's. If you're buying a piece of clothing (or shoes) and you don't feel like they are "you"...then don't buy, don't wear. And I'm sure we will ALL make mistakes.

My mom is great looking and youthful and I don't expect her to EVER wear Danskos... but at 48, the frayed denim American Eagle miniskirt is just off limits. It was an atrocious skirt on its own; combined with her age, it would have made her look foolish. I was doing her a favor. There's hot, and there's "mature woman trying to be 22"- which is so not hot.
