Maybe the solution is that we all should wash our hands less during day to day living (no question there are times, like surgery, that really need a higher level of cleanliness). Then we can all be more immune. I'm serious, why isn't that the answer?

OP, is your husband sick an unusual amount of the time? He would be the main sufferer of this lack of hygiene, if such suffering is happening at all. He probably has a good immune system from constant, low level exposure to all kinds of stuff.

I disagree. I think his DC would suffer more. As you state, his immune system has probably developed apace; he's still bringing this home to a young child who really shouldn't have Metro or bathroom germs go directly into her mouth.

Maybe in the short term, but the kid would get the iron immunity as well in time. It is how most of the world lives, no?

I wonder, given the amount of hyper-obsessiveness with hygiene on this thread, if there's a reason we're seeing growing numbers of allergies in US children when compared with the rest of the world.

ITA. OP's husband is an extremist, but in general, yuppies are way too sanitized. Anecdotal tidbit: I taught in a DCPS school in Congress Heights, where most DCUMs would never venture. In the entire elementary school, there was not a SINGLE food allergy. A whole school of prek-5 kids. We had some lactose intolerance (which is super common in the AA community) and seasonal allergies to pollen, but not a ONE peanut allergy. Very interesting.....

No, it's due to the amount of environmental toxins we are exposed to, in our food, clothes, homes, etc.

OP I would let him touch me! EWWWW He could give you all types of bacteria. This is why I do not participate in Pot Luck meals. Most gross people never think they are unclean. In fact these people are the first to put their hands on food without using a napkin! Just nasty!!!
