The kind of person who would take the time to find this picture and post it here is actually the kind of person I would be afraid of and avoid having in my house - not an immigrant laborer who is trying to make a living.

The pictur made me laugh out loud. Again, people missed the point. Sigh.

Sick and wrong. That's all.

I don't know about here (we're from CA too - decent Mexican food #1 on the list of things I miss about LA), but we always went down to the day laborer center when we needed temporary workers. In CA they are bonded, have insurance, etc., so you don't have liability if anyone gets hurt. Better than Home Depot, where you open yourself up to issues if something unfortunate happens.

Which in your tiny little pinhead means that all day laborers are murderers.

No but it does mean that when you hire people off the street corner you never know what you are going to get.

Whereas, with the Orkin Man, you have a full background investigation and he presents his ID when he walks in the door. Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

Urm yes. well maybe not the full background check, but in uniform wearing a company ID, driving a company truck, and coming to his scheduled appointment.

Instead of "I need three guys to dig fencepost holes"
"Cavar agujeros poste? Si!"

We hired a contractor last year to do some work on our home (new deck, new doors etc.) and when he showed up, he had a bunch of day laborers with him. The same happened when we hired a company to redo our bathrooms. They also used day laborers. Now, I have to say that they all did a good job. I provided them with water since the contractor basically left and the poor guys had no water etc. But, we also had some items missing from our home (iPod etc.). I was a bit careless because they were nice and I probably trusted a bit too much. Of course, I did not catch anyone in the act, but nobody was in the home other than my DH and myself and the workers.

Lesson learned!

Ditto. To those who missed it, I'm fairly certain the PP is mocking those the xenophobic pearl clutchers.

I have used day laborers probably 50 time at my house. Never had a problem. Most are very nice and are more worried about you stiffing them and sending them on thier way then hassling you at all.

Didn't some day laborers kill a doctor and most of his family a few years back? I'd say this wasn't worth the few extra bucks to hire someone legally.

Maybe you're thinking about Lulemon in Bethesda. Wait! That was a worker that killed her boss?
