| Westwood Country Club has lots of members in their 30s and 40s. |
|
Wasn't Kenwood started for Jewish families to have a country club to go to? That's what DH, who grew up in Bethesda, told me once.
Back in my hometown, the snooty country club wouldn't let in jews, including our family doctor. So my parents, who could easily have gotten in, joined the YMCA instead. So did some of their non-Jewish friends, too, for the same reason. The Y had a nice outdoor pool and tennis courts, although it was missing the flagstone patios and such. |
I think you're thinking Woodmont, but yes, essentially it was started because Jews couldn't get into other country clubs. |
| So how many people are at the pool on a typical summer afternoon? Or on the ice rink on a typical winter Saturday? Does anyone take their kids out on the golf course to teach them to golf? |
|
ahh the old country club debate racism at its best
Tehy are all hurting and willb e hurting further down the road. years back they were very hard to get into now, with the younger generations leaving the area, prices too high, clubs aging, and peopel not wanting to be part of exclusive clubs-the clubs see how it is impacting them and are opening their arms to anyone with $$$$ |
| The ignorance of this message board is truly astounding. |
| There have always been tokens at both Congressional and Chevy Chase. I have a couple of black friends whose parents were invited to "join" -30k in the 70's thank you-- and who stayed members for a few years and quit because being mistaken for a caddy when you're on the greens is pretty insulting. I've always found that the people who are the offspring of members and have inherited their entrance to those clubs--as opposed to those who worked themselves to get in, are the most insufferable a**holes I have ever known. |
PP, the initiation fee is like 100-150k with an annual fee of @80k. Asking this question is like asking: What is the gas milage on a 500 series Mercedes...Lol. No one is joining the Chevy Chase club just so they can have an uncrowded pool. Build your own pool, FFS. |

00:06, then enlighten us. Otherwise you're just an insufferable fool.
I'd hope that I'd be permitted to bring in my 22-year-old Asian trophy wife. Or are only Russian trophy wives permitted here? |
That initiation fee sounds a bit low. I thought it was more in the range of $250,000. I know lots of people that have joined on the company dime. I wonder if they are considered 2nd tier at those clubs. |
| No, the initiation fee is not $250k and no, the annual dues are not $80k. Why talk about something you know nothing about? |
| We were just with friends who asked us if we would like to join and I agree with the pp that those were not the amounts they quoted. |
Frankly, I don't know what it is now. My family (my dad) was a member during the 80's and 90's and then when he got a certain job he dropped the membership for political reasons. I'm just estimating the the fees based on the fee at that time. I assume they went up? But both places were pretty down at the heels in terms of the physical plant at the time--maybe they have lowered their fees to attract more members? Who cares--if you have to ask, etc....Just pointing out to OP that people don't join these types of clubs just to have an empty pool or tee time--there are much cheaper ways to do that-- give me a break! |

I think a friend just told me the initiation fee was about $85k. But I could be wrong. I'm fairly certain it's not $250k though! haha.
Also, my friends DID join to have a non-crowded pool and a regular tee time! |
| I heard 100K to join. That means they have to take people they might not have in the past. I think Alan Greenspan was the first Jew... |
