Sounds like you really want to black Black and Latino people for your choice to sell your house and move even though they have literally nothing to do with that. |
| Future WJ parent but used to live in the Woodward boundary. Would be happy with my kiddos going to either school. We're your typical Bethesda family and I doubt the differences between schools will make much difference in their future outcomes when so may outside factors come into play like tutors, lessons, networks, etc. |
No. Actually in previous/earlier threads I suggested if MCPS really wanted to be equitable they could look into allocating seats or percentages to students from specific schools. For example, there's no representation from the NEC to the Blair magnet program? Then allocate like 15 spots just for the students from the NEC. MCPS isn't doing anyone any favors in dumbing down programs and curriculum or just mix student groups to balance out test scores but not help students improve proficiency. Because it all ends up showing in standardized tests, college and afterwards. |

I actually think the success of Woodward depends less on the WJ kids moving there but on whether or not parents rezoned to Woodward from the DCC who currently send their kids to private schools will start sending their kids to Woodward or not. The FARMS rate could be lower than what MCPS projected it to be if more parents from that area use Woodward instead of private school.
Parents will choose private regardless and the DCC commute will be a nightmare. Lots of Northwood kids transferred to other DCC schools because of it. Is there any official statistics on the above two points: A - The percentage of students zoned for WW and VM that currently attend private schools B - Drop in Northwood enrollment during the years its students go to Woodward |

Long term, Woodward will be an excellent school. It is a brand new school placed in the middle of a beautiful residential area and close to everything.
Near term, there will be struggles. For some reason, they decided to give Woodward the worst magnet combo a school can get. As a result, most advanced students from Farmland/Luxmanor will be applying to the humanities magnet at WJ, and most advanced students from WW/VM will be applying to the STEM magnet at Wheaton (in part to also avoid a long commute). I hope whoever they select to be the new principal will have a strategy to fight this dynamic. After all, school's success is closely tied to the quality of students attending it. |
What on earth does that have to do with you wanting to sell your house? |

Is there any official statistics on the above two points: A - The percentage of students zoned for WW and VM that currently attend private schools B - Drop in Northwood enrollment during the years its students go to Woodward I believe MCPS has some stats/info on “capture rate” - how many kids living in an area go to MCPS schools - but they don’t talk about it much or make it public like ever. The Northwood info probably exists but in the context of the DCC choice process, which is different in a host of logistical details than the new regional program model |
Well isn't that ironic. You know what this is about. It's about MCPS planning poorly not maintaining their properties then closing and moving ENTIRE SCHOOLS. Ah, but you want to ding on someone that chooses to move their abode. |
| Northwood lost a couple hundred kids because of the holding school. I think most will come back in the new building in the neighborhood. |
They need to work on landscaping. If you look at the new Tilden building, it actually looks pretty nice now that the landscaping has matured. Come to think of it, WJ could use some landscaping too. |

There will be more tear downs etc. But it is important that current WJ families and staff go to Woodward and bring over knowledge from WJ. Might be bumpy for a couple of years, but it will work. A lot will depend on admin, how committed they are to making the regional programs work, etc. The stadium, auditorium and parking deck seem to be coming together nicely at Woodward. So grateful to County Council for funding all that!!!! |

Viers Mill was a feeder school to the original Woodward. |
I am not sure what you think WJ parents requested other than that everyone currently assigned to WJ go to either WJ or Woodward and parity between the two schools. And it's comical that you think WJ families get what they want - they've been asking for relief from overcrowding for over 10 years, and for relief from overcrowding for Ashburton ES for over 15 years |
I believe WJ families also advocated for a Woodward stadium (plus parking deck) and the auditorium build out, as those were not funded initially so the high school could have the same amenities as all MCPS high schools. And yes some even advocated for a performing arts (countywide) magnet (not knowing that would turn into a massive regional program generating so much controversy). |
I didn't say anything about selling a house. I said that there are different worlds and no one's world is necessarily the real/right world. It's just different worlds and it's fine. BUT with all of the talk about Joshua Starr and Thomas Taylor being champions for equity and diversity, they choose to live isolated in the richest parts of the county and their families wouldn't be affected by any of the proposed changes. Anything coming from them would just be based off of theory or numbers. And they really live in a different world but making judgement and decisions for people living in others. I was originally responding back to the poster who said that some former WJ families mixing with Woodward families would be good for them because they'd get more exposed to the real world. But did veer off in a tangent a little bit. But honestly Taylor and Starr are in their own little worlds too. |
