Woodward High School

How many of you are WJ parents who have been impacted by Woodward? Do you plan on sending your kids to Woodward, or are you going to move/send your kids to private?

I think it's unfair to Woodward and the people who are going to be putting in a ton of effort there to automatically assume that it won't be worth sending your kids to. I'd say give it a year or two to see what the admin in place is like before immediately jumping to pull your kids.

Who knows, maybe it ends up being another "W" school.

It will. Within 8 years the roles will reverse and it will surpass WJ in stature.

As a non-WJ parent but a Region 3 parent, I'm very excited for Woodward to open and am rallying for its success.

Woodward should be only slightly worse than RM. Yes, there will be issues with new school initially but eventually it will settle down in a few years. It is never going to be school like WJ, Whitman or Churchill but kids will be fine.

I actually think the success of Woodward depends less on the WJ kids moving there but on whether or not parents rezoned to Woodward from the DCC who currently send their kids to private schools will start sending their kids to Woodward or not. The FARMS rate could be lower than what MCPS projected it to be if more parents from that area use Woodward instead of private school.

I hope that Woodward is a great academic success. I just wish it didn't look like a storage facility.

Woodward is a w school and will be fine. This is what WJ parents asked for.

MCPS selects the most boring architects. Check out some of the redone high schools in DCPS. So much more interesting looking.

WJ, now Woodward parent here. I think Woodward will be good school. However, I will be selling my property and buying at WJ district. This is my personal choice due to my very sensitive kid whose friends are staying at WJ and she supposed to leave for Woodward. Yes, I will loose money, yes it sucks. But I prioritize my kid mental health and comfort

Woodward will be just fine. Hell, teachers from WJ I’m sure will move over to Woodward once WJ’s attendance is reduced.

I agree. The design of Woodward is not compelling and the same is true for Northwood.

We’re staying WJ per the new boundaries but I am concerned a lot of the best staff will be moved to support Woodward. Probably the right call but I’ll be sad to see some teachers and staff go.

Also I’ll have a senior the year it happens so wondering about all the teacher and counselor recs for college admissions and that whole process with so much change.

+1
The opening of a new school always attracts top talent. They will choose a capable, experienced principal who will have top pick of folks interested in being department heads. As a set they will bring with them some of the top teachers. The initial hiring for new schools happens before involuntary transfers are identified and the general transfer season begins. There may also be a secondary process where involuntary transfers from schools losing population (WJ) are placed at the new school.
