WWYD-- ? Mentor asking for word file of my CV

Anonymous
Dude, she can cut & paste & steal whatever she wants from your PDF. The Word doc isn’t giving her anything new - just her preferred format to mark up/add comments.

I think the lunch thing was weird & that is throwing off your judgement towards this person. But going forward, no, I would not hesitate to share your Word copy. If someone has devious motives, I assure you, having your CV in one format or another will not be a deterrent.

She can copy the pdf file if she wants, it’s not impossible.

I really can't understand why you think there is some sort of gold in the doc version of your resume. Can you please enlighten us as to what this is that the world might want?

signed, a senior executive applying for multiple types of jobs who now has offers and interviews.

+1 absolutely bizarre

Obviously people can copy text from a pdf

Word is better for editing in redline so you can see the suggestions.

Anonymous wrote:OP here-- thanks so much-- you have given me plenty to think about. I don't see the rationale for strong preference for a word file. Even googledocs will view a pdf file. And while pdf can be converted to word, it is wonky as hell. I had a recruiter try to do that and he said the formatting was all over the place.

I did not invite her to lunch, she suggested we get lunch and being the local person, i made arrangements. I thought with business lunches, the more senior pays or split. She makes almost 3x what I do!

I said I dont have the word file handy anymore and really worried about the timelines so I went ahead and submitted the application. I did say thank you for the support.

It might just be that the trust is not there. Or something is wrong with me!

The most senior person or who earns more is not relevant. You reached out asking for help. This isn’t a mentor, this is an acquaintance you are asking for free help. You suggested the get together for your needs and wants. You pay for the favor by paying for lunch.

+1

How far along in her career is she? Is she at a level where she has a huge team and very busy? Her trip seemed busy

Why would you give a busy person a hard time trying to edit in a format that requires specialized software or extra steps converting to make changes in?

OP here-- our industry is very heavy on adobe. There is zero chance she does not know how to use adobe or have no access to adobe PRO. (I will admit the responses here have been illuminating). She is a naturalized US citizen, C suite with stock options and on nonfortune 500 boards. I don't understand the request and felt iffy to ask why so i just pretended I dont have the word file anymore and didnt want her to be busied. I just dont think the trust is there and I dont want her gunning for me. I realize I am a nobody... but it's a small industry. I wish I could tell you my industry and you'll see why it's so laughable to ask for a word file.

Let it go then. You are nobody to her and probably wasting her time anyway.

Pp yes but even with Adobe, the formatting can get weird. Again, I think the lunch thing made you paranoid.

Shes a naturalized citizen? Where is she originally from?

I still don't get your logic.

If you assumed she had access to adobe pro to edit the resume, then you already sent it to her knowing that she would have the ability to edit it, and therefore steal it. And even if you sent it to her in hard copy or some uneditable format, she could always just re-type the portions she wanted to steal. Her having access to your resume and therefore the ability to copy it was implicit in you giving her a copy to review. I don't understand why her wanting the word document made you suddenly suspicious.

I don’t agree with this- and how bizarrely rude of you to say- but I do think op is not appreciating how asking for a Word doc is NBD whether she has adobe or now

I'm not following your issue at all. What does it matter what version?

It doesn’t matter where she’s from. Looks like OP didn’t have an American she could ask so here we are making do.

She can easily cut and paste from the pdf if she is so inclined. You are weird.

Okay, you want careeer advice, mentorship and resume help from her, and you expected her to pay for lunch?!!

Refusing to give her a Word copy of the resume is ultra strange and paranoid. As others have pointed out, if she wanted to steal the content she could, regardless of what format it was in.
