Thanks! She's pretty great -- brilliant and hardworking.
Still waiting on half a dozen reaches, so not yet sure where she lands -- but I'm sure she'll do great wherever she ends up. |
Solid applicant but impressive? I thought MCPS is known for grade inflation which detracts from a 4.0. Assume lots of kids at the school have high rigor. Non-recruited athlete is like any other EC and ECs are "solid" but not more. Independent research doesn't mean much without a result (published, etc.) so the SAT seems to be the strongest thing in the app., along with good grades at a school where many have good grades from what I understand. I hope this kid gets in somewhere amazing, but one day the class of 2027 or beyond will read posts like this and this may help someone else in deciding where to lay hopes. Good luck to that kid - seems bright! |
| MIT, the fairest, middle classes friendly and true merit based school. Good luck to everyone. |
Esp if you're a female or athlete! |
Nah. All the kids win their spot by academic merits. |
| We need more schools like MIT. We need fairness. We need real smart kids to change the society. |
-100 Mit athletes get no admissions boost whatsoever from Coaches. Yeah, admissions gets a notice who the coach supports but 2/3 of those kids still won’t get in. The 1/3 that do are because they are qualified. No one unqualified is getting into MIT no matter what your athletic abilities are. |
Female athlete is a huge plus. From DC’s school, the (female) valedictorian got deferred, while a female athlete (not on top 10 percent) got accepted. Over the past 7 years, the only kids who have gotten into MIT from that (private DMV) school are athletes. |

oh, all athletes at all schools are academically qualified. we hear that all the time.
the last 3 admits to MIT from our high school just *happened* to be athletes. |
Tell me you’ve not had a kid recruited by MIT without saying so. Cal Tech and MIT are probably the only schools where recruiting does not help in admissions as far as a boost. |
Yup. There are lots of 4.0's in mcps with max rigor and solid but not exceptional ec's. We didn't think she'd get in -- and it's ok that she didn't. That said, what I find most impressive is that she's doing an independent study only after already acing every math course MC has to offer. She also has a heck of personal story -- that actually relates to what she's chosen to study -- but it's niche enough that I don't want to say it here to be google-able in perpetuity lol So many talented and accomplished kids out there these days! Good luck to all. |
| rejected MIT and Caltech. Waitlist at Harvey Mudd. Ugh. |
Sorry. How disappointing. What's their current front-runner? |
What are the stats? I hope he/she has some good acceptance in hands already. |
Some need less merit than others. |
